Sharing Sunday, v.10: Today, I'll keep it a bit light as I had a big weekend supporting the UMD Terps eeking out a win against the Cornhuskers in Lincoln, NE. I was hosted by my business partners Jeff Carpenter, Michael Snodgrass and his son Brian. Despite traveling extensively globally, I've never been to that part of the US. I had no expectations but had some preconceived notions of what I would encounter there. What was so surprising, I am happy to report, is that the experience FAR exceeded my expectations and am now a big fan of the town and more importantly the people. So with that, I will share 3 things Jeff told me, reminded me of, or exposed me to. 1. Told me - "Major in your passion, minor in business" - Basically, for those of you who have kids heading off to college, help them help themselves by letting them follow their passions, but make sure they are grounded in the basics of business. This is because no matter what they end up doing, they'll need a foundation to know how to manage their finances and understand economics to know what to expect for the future. 2. Reminded me - "Sometimes, you need to pay to take the trash out" - This phrase we spoke of several times. It refers to the concept of what happens when you can no longer work with partners or colleagues. In those circumstances, you will need to figure out how best to divorce yourself from the current situation. In many cases, your instinct is to dig your heels in, make them feel your perceived pain or anger at the situation. What you end up needing to do is understand that the faster you can conclude things and move on, the better (mentally and other) you will be. Pay to remove the friction. 3. Exposed me to - Malort.
