I appreciate the reach outs from many emerging companies. I’ll review. Clearly there are a few trends in the industry. 1. There is an LLM driven tech transition going on. This is leading to reorgs and layoffs in big companies. I also see senior engineers opting out of big organizations that aren’t figuring out their gen ai strategy fast enough. They don’t know where to go and many are considering joining startups or founding their own. 2. AI startups are messing up internally even if it looks good externally. There are a number of startups with founders with good backgrounds (influential academic/research) who can raise $10-100M, but are missing one of the following. i) any real tech differentiation and the ability to build it, ii) product experience allowing them to match research ideas to real customer problems, iii) engineering leadership abilities that allow them to hire teams that work effectively together without politics . Not to say that I’ve figured these out - it’s hard - but it helps to at least be able to see the problems. Im sure there are good options out there. I’d also appreciate perspectives from employees and people on the market. What are your top choices and why?
Who are emerging startups hiring ML and Systems Engineers? At Lamini we hired an amazing team and are going to slow down MLE and Systems Eng for a while to keep the quality high with a small team. I get a huge amount of inbound interest and I want to really help candidates with their job search. So who is doing cutting edge work an a small company? For bigger companies I usually suggest NVIDIA/AMD for systems, Meta for open source ML, and Anthropic for foundation models. If you are a founder who is really doing something amazing without politics and drama -lets get in touch.

Most healthtech companies are unwittingly driving away their most valuable engineers with meaningless projects and superficial perks, but it's time to wake up to the reality that purpose-driven hiring is the key to unlocking true innovation. The biggest problem facing healthtech companies today is not a lack of talent, but a lack of purpose, resulting in top engineers wasting their skills on trivial pursuits rather than tackling the toughest challenges in healthcare. It's time to flip the script and start hiring engineers who are passionate about healthcare, not just coding, and give them the autonomy to work on projects that truly matter, with the support to see those projects through to completion.
