DevOps Evangelist & Spiritual Coach | DevOps Ambassador, Speaker and Author | I help people 100x in Professional and Personal life through Spiritual Wisdom, Healing and Technology
Several years ago, I was excited to join a large Enterprise as Build Engineer. Little did I know, that the first year would test my resilience like never before. On the second day itself, I was placed in a team that handled build/deployment/user support of a large Enterprise system. The team was my lead and I. My challenges were: ❌ No documentation; since stuff was proprietary, could not google it ❌ Beginner in Linux; we were deploying in 9 Unix flavours! ❌ Spaghetti system; it was very complex to understand I would come in at 9'ish and people would immediately start with their doubts. And in 99% of the cases, I had absolutely NO idea on how to reply to these queries! My Lead would waltz in post 1:30pm and on hearing my questions, the daily response was: 1️⃣ is very easy 2️⃣ you should know by now 3️⃣ is too difficult, i'll handle it And then, he would walk away for tea And I would crawl back to my desk. This saga continued for ~6 months. I was getting really frustrated 😫 I'd complained, cried, struggled 😖 No one was coming to my rescue 🛟 Then, one weekend - A SWITCH FLIPPED IN MY MIND I completely changed my attitude with my Lead The next afternoon when he waltzed in, I did not run up to him. The next 3 afternoons when he waltzed in, I did not run up to him. On day 4, I waited for him to go for tea And I happened "to be there" for tea No work talk; discuss random stuff Ask about stuff he wanted to talk And as we walked back, i'd say - hey, for <name's> issue, I've tried a, b, c, what's next step? And he would tell me the next step, just like that. And I would walk back to my desk, just like that. And add this to my knowledge base document. I realised that my Lead had always worked alone 👈 He was too skilled to explain anything to anyone 👈 Asked A QUESTION, he always gave a good reply 👈 I changed my attitude with people asking the questions. Let's try x and y. I'll have to research and revert tomorrow. Next day, I would go with my research and give suggestions. And most of the times, the problem would be reasonably resolved. I would again add this to my knowledge base document, just like that. The lead left the organisation after one year 👋 We continued to stay in touch after that 📱 Years later, he met me and Manpreet at a movie theatre. Later, he treated both of us to an awesome Biryani. Once we were back home, we raised a toast to our resiliance :-) ⁉️ Let me know in the comments if you relate with this story? ⁉️ Also, please share any similar experience you might have had? #ToughBoss #OvercomingChallenges #UnderstandingPeople
