Does anything about Rachel's journey feel familiar to you? "When I started my #NoNewClothes journey, I was living in New York City, AKA the epicenter of thrifting. But I’ve since moved back to my home state and still have had incredible finds at my local second hand stores. I don’t see a world where I go back to buying new clothes because it just doesn’t make any sense. There is an unfathomable amount of perfectly good clothing going to waste each year, I simply don’t need to buy new things. It’s easy to think that one transaction, or one online order won’t make a difference. But things do add up. I like to think that every time someone compliments what I’m wearing and I tell them I bought it second hand, I’m slightly opening their mind to thrift stores and diverting them from the mall. When multiple people are making conscious clothing choices, the impact will compound that much faster. It’s not easy to get the world to stop clicking “Order Now,” but we have to start somewhere – the earth is begging us. My consumer footprint is one of the few things I can control in my life. I don’t want to waste that opportunity. I’m choosing to make the most out of this by buying the least." - Rachel Cross, 2.5 years and counting with No New Clothes ♻️ Reset your relationship with fashion - click to read more about the challenge and start your 3 months of #NoNewClothes today: https://lnkd.in/gRpuSuiH

Happy Earth Day! 🌍 Lately, I’ve been reflecting on my habits as a consumer and how they impact the planet. While I still stand by the shopping hierarchy: - Wear what you own - Thrift - Shop curated vintage - Support local makers - Choose independent brands - Occasionally indulge in designer pieces - Embrace fast fashion mindfully (meaning if once in a blue moon you think something at Zara or Urban Outfitters is cute and want to get it, don’t beat yourself up over it. As long as you wear it, take care of it, and then give it a second life through resale or donation. What this does not mean is buying ‘hauls’ of fast fashion for social media…) I’ve also been thinking a lot about that moment when the desire for something new arises. Why do I want it? Am I bored, sad, seeking a little dopamine? If so, I step back and reassess. If after a week or more the item is still crossing my mind, I delve deeper into my motivations. By doing this I not only save myself money, I also avoid a closet full of items with their tags still on, and dreaded returns! We discussed consumer behavior at length at Sustainable Fashion Forum last week, and I can’t wait to keep having these conversations. This year I’m committed to ongoing experimentation with anticipation + adding to cart vs. actually hitting buy, rewiring my thought patterns, and encouraging others to do the same. 🌍 #earthday #sff24con #yesitsthrifted

Ex-Accountant | Ex-financial Advisor | Now Financial Educator & Advocate | Best-selling Author | Speaker
Have you ever caught yourself mid-doing something that you said you weren't going to do and it just happened almost unconsciously. Just me? OK, as you were then. Personally, last week it was Sara Blakeley's sneaker heels. I am a DINK who loves me some clothes and shoes but I'd decided last week that I'm going to shop my closet for the next few months. That I'm not going to buy anything new and spend some time culling, selling and consigning some of what I do have. As anyone who looked into my closet would say - you have enough at home. And yet on Thursday last week I caught myself adding to cart on Sara's new site, one of her sneaker heels. I mean 🙄. The reason I write this isn't for you to judge me on my shoe choices. I'm doing that already. Instead, it's to remind you (and me) that we live in a hyper-capitalist society that has been designed to sell to us 24/7. I'm old enough to remember when stores didn't open on a Sunday. When you had to leave the house in order to shop. Yes, I still got myself in trouble with store cards and credit cards when I was younger, but I didn't have apps on my phone I could keep shopping with simply and easily at any time of the day. As Dr Gina Cleo, a leading habit expert says, our willpower is a muscle and the more you use it, the more fatigued it gets. We live in a society where our willpower is constantly being tested. Every moment of every day. That's why today I want to remind you of two things. Firstly, that it's hard to stay focused on your goals, to not have your willpower overrun and when that happens, to be kind to yourself. And secondly, to set up your financial life in such a way that it's harder for your willpower to become fatigued. Some easy ways to do that are to unsubscribe from emails causing you to spend outside your goals and values, to unfollow influencers and brands on social media, to have social media hiatuses, to practice financial goals sprints that you can keep up with and be motivated by and to choose not to use credit cards or Buy Now Pay Later which is like lube for your spending. Take some time this week to think about how you're going to give your willpower a break. And help set you up for financial success. #melbrowne #finance #financeexpert

Why do we buy clothes? It's not just about filling our closets; it's a journey filled with personal reasons and unique motivations. For me, clothes has being functional, however chatting with friends, family and Reddit community, I realized its more then that: 𝐉𝐨𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐞: For many, shopping is a source of fun and stress relief, offering a temporary escape from the rigors of daily life. 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠: We often seek to fit in with our social circles or dress for specific occasions, using our attire as a means of expression and to signal our belonging. 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐔𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐲: Sometimes, not knowing what’s buried in our closets can lead to impulse purchases, buying items that are perhaps unnecessary. What drives your clothing choices? Is it about keeping up with trends, expressing your identity, or something entirely different? #FashionInsights #ConsumerBehavior #RetailTherapy #ClosetConscious #day9

It's clear that the only way for the fashion industry to curb its terrible impact on the planet is to drastically reduce production. This means making fewer items, and charging more for them. Most brands refuse to do this because they believe consumers want to keep buying enormous quantities of cheap products. Those brands are wrong. There's a growing group of consumers who are sick of being part of a capitalist system that demands that they constantly consume. They're refusing to buy clothes for a fixed period of time--from months to a full year. And nonprofits like remake.world are accelerating this movement by inviting followers to sign a pledge to stop shopping, and providing a lot of practical support along the way. People who have stopped shopping this have found 💰 They're saving money. Sure, clothes are very cheap today. But that's because we're asked to keep buying new clothes all the time. Over the span of months, this adds up to a lot of savings. 🧘♀️ Retail therapy was always a lie. A new purchase gives us a hit of dopamine, but it's ultimately ephemeral and doesn't result in real happiness. People who don't have the option to shop fill find healthier ways to feel better on a bad day. 🌍 Their impact goes far beyond their own closet. Some people think that it can't possibly matter if a single person stops shopping, given that the fashion industry churns out hundreds of billions of garments a year. But brands are very sensitive about changes in people's buying habits. And if dozens, hundreds, or thousands of customers are shopping less, it can compel a brand to rethink it's business model. Have you tried to give up clothing shopping? How did it go? Is this the way out of the fashion crisis?

I recorded this video over the summer, but, like many of you who buy clothes and never wear them, I never got around to posting it. Hence, the short shorts! 😀 However, the message in the video is still very much so relevant: 1. Know your body measurements. 2. Find stores that carry clothes based on your measurements. 3. Shop at those stores only. 4. Show up confidently and boldly. I can't stress enough how using this approach makes shopping and dressing for your body a much more empowering experience. #BodyPosivitity #WomenEmpowerment #Confidence #StyleToImpact
