If your customers are leaving in droves because your product lacks core features that your competitors offer, it's probably not the right time to emphasize focusing on technical debt. If everything is running smoothly and you're expecting growth, this might be an excellent opportunity to ensure your foundations are solid. As a staff+, you should be able to understand the company's direction. You cannot allow your ego to prioritize pushing technical debt if the company is losing users due to missing core features. In such cases, your role should be to help the company deliver features faster while maintaining quality. #staffengineer

2024 is the year we will build our first product. 🔥 Here's how we are approaching it: 1) We are building it to solve our own problems. We have our own pains and know that other companies share them with us. However, we will build it first for our own use and distribute it later. 2) We will take our time but ship it strategically. There's no rush for now but we will also not wait for it to be a full-fledged product. We plan to ship it in modules as soon as each one is ready. 3) We will build our own dev controls and libraries. As engineers, we are sick and tired of having to adapt limited controls and libraries to what we want to do. So we will build our own and make them available to the public. 4) We will share the process and the progress with you. We pride ourselves in the way we build great software products and we plan to share it with you. The picture below is a sneak peek of how we are organizing it. We have just wrapped up the 1st cycle and we couldn't be more excited for what is coming! If you're part of HR in a 10+ people company, DM me, I'd love to get your feedback on what we're building. 🔥

Software Engineer @ Sierra Interactive + Founding Engineer @ AuditionCat | TypeScript | React | Node | RESTful API
I'm working on a task today to remove part of my team's codebase. ✂️ I admit, the first couple of times we did this I had a pretty strong internal reaction. 😵 Especially because I'm working on a new, "greenfield" project. "We worked so hard on the challenges for that part!" "What about all the time we spent on this?" "Are we going to be able to meet our deadlines for building this new service if we keep pivoting / removing?" However, after the first few times, I began to welcome this act of removal. It's freeing to not feel attached to your code. And it makes for a squeaky clean codebase. Just like how I like to keep my physical workspace clutter-free, it's nice to keep my virtual workspace clutter-free, too! Besides, as a career changer who used to actively make decisions to frequently change and update our workflow and automation processes, I know that these moments are to be embraced. Sure, it may set us back a few days, but the result will be so well worth it in the long-term! ✨️🙌 (...or we'll change tactics and pivot again...but the result is still the same!) #softwareengineering #softwaredevelopment #cleancode #cleanworkspace

We think it's time to start talking about what we're building and why in way more detail. So today, we're gonna start writing about the "why" behind every major feature in Yetto. Remember the last time you picked up a tricky conversation from the queue? You did an hour of research, wrangled engineers and product folks who didn't want to be found, wrote detailed notes in case anything happened to you before the customer got the help they needed... but now you're stuck at the last step. Do you set it to "Pending"? Do you "Snooze" it? Is this "On Hold"? Which one do I pick if I don't want it to get lost? Why is this hard? Does it have to be? Let's talk about why, and how we're fixing it. https://lnkd.in/gW_iVY84

CEO of BrightInvestor - Acquistions Specialist with Rod Khleif - 376 Commercial Multifamily Units - Retired Geospatial Analyst - Penn State & Iowa State Keynote Speaker - Start-Up & Real Estate Mentor
Starting a multi-million software start-up @ 22 years old taught me this... 1. Build what your customers need, not what they want. 2. People support successful things because there is little-to-no reputational risk. If people don't support you right away, it's okay. Just part of the game. 3. Talking to users is the #1 thing you need to do. I've done over 100+ hours of user feedback, cancelled-user roast sessions, and power hours, to learn the core of what people need. 4. Growth is not linear. It's more of a stair-step between "Everything sucks" and "I'm a genius" 5. Consistency is key. Continual effort each day in small amounts compounds into being lightyears ahead of competition. 6. Whenever someone gives you an idea, lose about 40% of it and build the core of what they're asking for. Cut the bells & whistles. AND THE MOST IMPORTANT >>> Leaders take responsibility, give credit, and get out of the way. Stay tuned for more from this first-time founder from Iowa.
