This building will be a significant part of the Denver skyline for the rest of my life. I am happy that I was able to contribute my small part to this." What kind of projects do you want to work in the future? 🎤"I hope to continue to contribute to architecturally forward projects that represent the personalities of the cities they are built in. A building should make you pause to look up as you walk past." What do you see as the largest barrier to a zero-waste building, city, and world? 🎤"The building materials themselves. Large steps need to be taken in the next few decades to find and use local materials with the smallest environmental impact." What is the greatest potential for architecture and/or engineering to shape a neighborhood community? 🎤"Buildings designed with the community in mind. Foot traffic, restaurants, and housing intermixed to form a unique community that people enjoy spending time in." What restaurant would you recommend your coworkers to try? 🎤"Lucky Noodles in Denver. Last Friday, Element5 Founder and VP, Corporate Citizenship Patrick Chouinard spoke to ULI Toronto's Curtner Urban Leadership Program cohort at the BDP Quadrangle offices to discuss the City of Toronto's return to the housing development market as one piece of the broader affordable housing mix, and more broadly on architecture and design as it relate to public housing. We of course, are big proponents of the use of #masstimber for #affordablehousing. As the affordable housing crisis is fundamentally a supply problem, the solution involves industrializing the supply chain by building more multi-unit housing in factories - and this can be done with #masstimber and have the biophilic benefits that go with it for the occupants.

More on our City of Detroit’s resurgence. For anyone like me who grew up as a kid in the city, Hudson’s was so much more than a department store. Fun nerd facts: 💥At its high point, Hudson’s downtown generated over $163 million in revenue in 1954 ($1.2B today!) 💥The store was bigger than the new building at 2,124,316 sq ft (1.5M new site) 💥The store had 32 floors; at 410 feet, it was the tallest store in the world. 💥51 passenger elevators, 17 freight elevators, 8 employee elevators and 48 escalators. 💥Generated enough electricity to power a city of about 20,000. 💥39 men's restrooms, 50 for women and 10 private ones for executives. 💥705 fitting rooms, a world record. 💥Dining rooms and cafeterias served an average of 10,000 meals a day - plus 6,000 meals a day for employees. 💥 200 departments across an incredible 49 acres of floor space 💥 Carried 600,000 items from 16,000 vendors from 40 countries. 💥Hudson’s was a major employer, with over 6,000+ downtown employees. 💥During its heyday, it was the most popular site for Santa, and the sponsors of the Thanksgiving Day parade. 💥After several failed redevelopment efforts, the storied building was imploded in 1998, and was an empty lot until new construction began.
