#snsinstititions #snsdesignthinkers #designthinking ̲ ̲O̲L̲Y̲M̲P̲I̲C̲ The modern Olympic Games or Olympics (French: Jeux olympiques are the leading international sporting events featuring summer and winter sports competitions in which thousands of athletes from around the world participate in a variety of competitions. This weekend is the Olympic Trials for Canadian relay sprinters in the following events; 4x100m and 4x400m both men and women plus the mixed 4x400 event. The event returns to Nassau, Bahamas where 28 Canadian athletes will attempt to qualify these 5 relay squads for the Paris Olympics. As each of the 5 teams will field 4 runners to the starting position, the coaching staff lead by Glenroy Gilbert will have to select from a list of 6 to 8 athletes on each squad. On the surface this may seem obvious in an event like the men’s 4x100m where long term success is part of Canadian history. Not so much in the other events where we have not been represented at all such as the men’s 4x400m and mixed 4x400m. Our sprinters train in a variety of groups and universities in the Americas and have never been at an event this season. Comparing the results in a variety of early season results from around the world is complicated by sprinters facing a variety of environmental factors such as wind, altitude and temperature. World rankings exclude wind aided times. Here are results that are excluded: Duan Asemoto,100m 9.98 (3.4) Aaron Brown 100m10.05 (3.4), Eliezer Adjibi 100m 10.05 (4.0), Sadie McCreath 100m 11.16 (3.5), Crystal Emmanuel-Ahy 100m 11.28 (2.2), Jacqueline Madago 100m 11.29 (3.5), Andre De Grasse 200m 20.11 (3.1), Jeremiah Lauzon 200m 20.71 (3.9), Chris Morales-Williams 200m 20.87 (4.5), Audrey Leduc 200m 22.77 (3.0), Makenzy Pierre-Webster 200m 23.19 (2.7), Aiyanna Stiverne 200m 23.40 (3.0). The process in Nassau could look like this: A total of 14 countries will be selected for Paris in each of the relays. 32 teams will be assigned into 4 heats of 8 countries with the top 2 teams selected May 4. The remaining 32 countries will move on to May 5 to form 3 heats of 8 countries with the top 2 teams in each section creating 6 more countries. This qualifies a total of 14 countries for the Olympic Games. Streaming video coverage both live and delayed are available in Canada from online CBC Sports.
