Passionate Health Equity & Diversity in Clinical Trial Champion. Committed to Action. Committed to Results.
#SCOPE2024 is in full effect. I'm reminded that the TIME is NOW! We can't afford to wait on the sidelines for innovation. 🌟 Excited to share insights from my speech at the Innovation Network - The Gathering Event, hosted by YPrime where I explored the innovative angle of improving diverse representation in clinical trials by examining homeownership in America. 🏠 In a time where questions like "Am I safe? Will this help me? Will I be heard?" resonate deeply, drawing parallels between the fear of the unknown in homeownership and in the clinical trial space sheds light on critical issues of inclusion and equity. Reflecting on my own experience transitioning from shared-wall living to homeownership, I couldn't help but draw parallels to the fear many people of color experience in clinical settings. As a person with asthma, I faced the daunting reality of inadequate representation in clinical trials firsthand, highlighting disparities in treatment effectiveness and outcomes among different racial groups. As we commemorate Black History Month, it's imperative to acknowledge historical injustices that have shaped both the housing sector and clinical research. From the struggles of James Coleman, my great-great-grandfather, who fought for freedom and later achieved homeownership, to the exploitation of individuals like Anarcha in medical experimentation, history serves as a stark reminder of the need for progress and equity in both realms. Drawing lessons from the strides made in homeownership, we can identify key strategies to advance diversity in clinical trials: 1️⃣ Institutional Innovations to Reduce Barriers: Embracing novel trial designs and methodologies, setting clear goals for diverse participation, and fostering collaborations to enhance representation. 2️⃣ Connecting with Deeper Purpose: Prioritizing person-centered care, leveraging data to understand community needs, and engaging stakeholders to fulfill diversity action plans. 3️⃣ Showing All Available Inventory: Utilizing tools to visualize and map trial opportunities, ensuring equitable access to information and resources. 4️⃣ Being A Good Neighbor: Cultivating a welcoming and supportive environment for trial participants, utilizing community health workers and trusted ambassadors, and demonstrating genuine care and empathy throughout the trial process. Together, let's continue to champion diversity and inclusion in clinical research, ensuring that everyone feels a sense of belonging, safety, and empowerment. Our commitment to equity and justice will not only enhance the integrity of our research but also pave the way for transformative innovations that benefit all. #BlackHistoryMonth #DiversityInClinicalTrials #Innovation #Inclusion #Equity #Healthcare #ClinicalResearch #Leadership #ThoughtLeadership #GameChangers #TheGatheringEvent #H1 #H1TrialLandscape

The use of technology to promote equity or "#Techquity" is a hot topic at #vive2024 and something I love working on at Phreesia. Dr. Kyu Rhee shared that, "Data collection is core to improving disparities" during a panel on the importance of engaging community health centers in innovation. Check out the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) to learn how to partner with these essential cogs in the healthcare system.

Data Alert! 😃 We recently surveyed 14 #PACE organizations, asking a wide range of administrators and IDT members to choose their top 3 out of 8 pre-determined challenge areas. The takeaway is that, by far, the most top-of-mind challenge area across PACE is “reducing avoidable emergency room visits” with “reducing falls” and “coordination of transportation and related costs” close behind. We’re sharing this insight to help the #PACE community align on challenge priorities and to contribute to the national vision of what we need to achieve together to reach National PACE® Association's expansion goals by 2028. 🌟 care.coach partners with PACE Interdisciplinary Teams across all these challenge areas and has presented at #NPA2022 & #NPA2023 with the following findings: ➡ reducing ER & hospital inpatient claims for a Hispanic psychiatric high utilizer at INSPIRA HEALTH NETWORK LIFE INC from $15,370/mo to only $3,849/mo. ➡ reducing falls at Care Resources PACE 40% through a multi-prong program including coaching evidence-based Otago exercises. ➡ avoiding >100 at-door transportation cancellations per year across 67 participants by encouraging PACE attendance and improving communication. For care.coach, and other innovators striving to solve the most important problems in #PACE, we have our marching orders! Also, if you are a #PACE program looking for a proven solution in PACE to these kinds of challenges, please get in touch!

💫 LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE with PACE and In Home Technology 💫 Meet Ruth, a #PACE participant whose life underwent a considerable change with the help of care.coach services. Previously reliant on caregivers and the #PACE Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) for daily reminders and reassurance, Ruth struggled managing medication schedules, medical appointments, and maintaining basic routines. She frequently experienced anxiety, panic attacks, and a loss of independence due to forgetfulness and uncertainty. However, with the introduction of her care.coach avatar, Sammy, things started to change. The interactive avatar from care.coach became her companion, offering medication reminders, appointment notifications, assistance with redetermination paperwork, and friendship. Through daily interactions with care.coach, Ruth regained a sense of control and independence. She no longer felt overwhelmed by her medical needs or anxious about forgetting important details. Instead, she felt supported, empowered, and capable of managing her health and well-being. Today, Ruth is thriving as a #PACE participant. Her anxiety is mitigated, panic attacks are managed, and she has reclaimed her independence and functionality. Her journey is a powerful testament to the life-changing impact of personalized support and technological integration in healthcare. At care.coach, we're committed to empowering individuals like Ruth to live their best lives and her story is just one of millions. - 16 million Americans aged 65 and older are impacted by cognitive decline (Alzheimer's Association, 2021). - 50% of older adults’ prescription medications for chronic disease are not taken as directed (Barnett, K., & Mercer, S. W., 2007). - 250,000 older adults are hospitalized each year resulting from medication related errors (The Joint Commission, 2018). Together, let's spread the word about stories like Ruth’s, to advocate for innovative solutions to address the growing needs of our aging population and ensure that every older adult can live with dignity and independence. #HealthTech #PersonalizedCare #TransformingLives #PACE #innovation National PACE® Association CalPACE LeadingAge MassPACE Association @FPPA PACE Association of Michigan

A recent survey conducted with C-suite hospital executives and health equity leaders in the health and life sciences industries revealed that approximately 80% of the respondents said that health equity will be one of their top-ten business goals for 2024. The survey also found that there will be a significant increase in patient engagement, with nearly half of the respondents expecting their organizations to focus more on this aspect. Furthermore, 60% of health equity leaders stated that increasing community engagement and collaboration is their top priority for 2024. These findings highlight the importance of health equity and its impact on the overall healthcare industry. It is encouraging to see that so many organizations are committed to investing in this crucial area and prioritizing it as a business goal. Those of us ‘boomers’ who have reached the aging frontier of 75 plus years must consider the material in this important paper. “This paper explores the rapidly growing integration of technology in the delivery of health and social care specifically focused on enabling “Ageing in the Right Place” (AIRP) (Iciaszczyk et al. 2022: 1). While exploring emerging opportunities and challenges, it specifically highlights growing disparities that are creating digital divides, as well as ethical concerns that will need to be addressed and supported by comprehensive evaluation frameworks and policies. Ultimately, the development of inclusive and ethical technologies for enabling AIRP in collaboration with all relevant stakeholders – including policy makers, researchers, caregivers and older adults – is needed to ensure that new technologies can both empower and ultimately improve the lives of older adults.”

With April being #NationalMinorityHealthMonth, it is a great time to reflect on how the Global Alzheimer's Platform Foundation's work with communities has improved representation of minority and underrepresented communities in the healthcare space. Every day, all year long, we ask #GAPNet sites ‘What can we do to help in your community? How can we expand our reach? Where can we be better? How can we help?’ We don’t need to dive too deeply to find that the best way GAP serves our sites, their communities, and #Alzheimers and #Parkinsons disease research is through collaboration. By working in hand with community-based organizations and leaders, and through outreach events, conferences, and clinical trials, we can extend our reach to those who need us most and let that guide our direction. Most recently, this is manifested in a continuation of our groundbreaking study Bio-Hermes with Bio-Hermes-002. With a commitment to over 25% of participants being from traditionally underrepresented communities, we continue to make sure that we are walking the walk and forging the path for other clinical trial sponsors to follow.
