Next week, countless governments, #Indigenous peoples and their representatives, NGOs, scientific organizations, and companies (including Planet) will be meeting in Cali, Colombia for #COP16, the UN’s summit on protecting #nature and #biodiversity. A major theme will be how to move big human systems in a #naturepositive direction, among them the behavior of the private sector and the “nature-smart” allocation of capital.
Doing so remains a daunting task. Unlike financial risks, there are (as yet!) no universally accepted and mandated frameworks for nature-based reporting and risk assessment. Measuring nature is inherently more complex than measuring, say, #carbon, as it involves assessing a wide diversity of ecosystems. High-quality, actionable data on #biodiversity, #ecosystem health, and other natural factors has been “lumpy” — available in some places, but not in others. And integrating and synthesizing multiple sources of nature-relevant data, like satellite imagery, eDNA, ecological surveys, etc. requires sophisticated #datascience capabilities. Companies and regulators alike often lack the expertise (and the resources) to do this work themselves, and are facing many other competing pressures. Perhaps as a consequence, the policy landscape has proceeded in stutter-steps, with regulations being introduced and then rolled back.
Yet as material as all these issues are, every one of them is being overcome. Thanks to new sensing and #AI technologies, for instance, we are moving from data deserts to a veritable deluge of reliable, lower-cost, high-quality, comprehensive and accessible sources of nature-based information. New digital infrastructure is being developed to house it, use it, and simplify its reporting. That in turn, will reduce the reporting burden for companies and give confidence to regulators. And it will and help nature-positivity become a source of competitive differentiation, not just compliance.
To help business leaders navigate this shifting landscape, Planet and a group of world-class partners - ERM, Salesforce, and NatureMetrics - formed the Nature Tech Alliance. And on the 24th of October, at #COP16, we’ll be jointly releasing a new white paper, "The Nature Tech Revolution: Unlocking Tools for a 'Nature-Positive' Approach”, for which we interviewed 18 leading global corporations to assess their approaches to measuring, managing, and disclosing biodiversity across their whole value chain.
Stay tuned for more - on the white paper, and on Planet's many other engagements at #COP16.

Starting next week, the eyes of the world will turn to Cali, Colombia, for the next UN Biodiversity Conference, COP16. We at Planet are proud to share that we will be on the ground for the week, demonstrating how we work in tandem with global governments, researchers, NGOs, and businesses to restore and value nature, protect ecosystems, and halt extinction.
The just-published 2024 Living Planet Report suggests there’s been a 73% drop in wildlife populations since 1970, as iconic ecosystems like coral reefs and tropical forests face possible tipping points and loss. At a crucial moment for life on Earth, we’re working with our partners across myriad industries to help build effective solutions, drawing on the latest technology and AI.
Next week at COP16, with ERM, Salesforce, and NatureMetrics, we will release a new report with insights from leading companies about their nature performance journeys – what they’re learning, where they’re stuck. We identify key steps to move from “Do No Harm” to “Nature-Positive” through thoughtful and timely integration of data and tech, and show how leading performers are already on their way. Stay tuned for next week’s release!
