Hire Managers of One: A Game-Changer for Your Team I still remember reading a insightful article from Basecamp long ago, and it has stuck with me ever since. The idea is simple yet powerful: hire "managers of one" - smart people who don't need direction. They set their own goals, execute them without oversight, and don't require daily check-ins. Reflecting on my experiences, I've seen firsthand how these individuals can make a huge impact. They pay attention to details, listen to feedback, and take ownership of their work. They're proactive problem-solvers, self-directed learners, and results-oriented. They're effective communicators, accountable, and strategic thinkers. On the other hand, I've also worked with people who require constant direction and micromanaging. They don't listen, neglect details, and need others to compensate for their lack of ownership. It's a stressful and unproductive experience for everyone involved. So, how do you identify these "managers of one" during the hiring process? I look for signals like: - Initiative and proactive problem-solving - Self-directed learning and growth mindset - Results-oriented approach and data-driven decisions - Effective communication and collaboration - Accountability and ownership - Strategic thinking and adaptability I'm not perfect at spotting them, but I try to gauge their potential by exploring their past experiences and behaviors.
