Dr Makary raises so many issues that need to be addressed by medical professionals. First, while I recognize Dr Makary as a genuine and objective physician scientist it is still important all of us look at study data ourselves. Second, medical studies and how they’re interpreted by physicians who care for thousands of patients is amplified to many lives, illustrating the importance of truth in science. What we need to recognize is that what we are fed in our busy practices shouldn’t be acted upon in a knee jerk fashion. This is true in both positive and negative study results. Too many providers are handed a drug rep marketing folder with colorful graphics and numbers such as “32% reduction in hospitalization for CHF” for a drug that has potential adverse events and might cost $1,000 a month or more. Remember, while the co-pay is “only” $35 the true cost to the system is much higher and we’re all paying for it. We must be responsible and look deeper.
"This is one of the biggest screw-ups in modern medicine." - Marty Makary M.D., M.P.H., on the lack of data showing breast cancer as a side-effect of hormone replacement therapy for women I was lucky enough to be joined on last Friday's special episode of Self-Funded with Spencer by Dr. Marty Makary, author of the new book "Blind Spots", and he spoke at length on how these public health recommendations get passed with no evidence, why that's so dangerous, and what we can do about it. This is just one example of many that show that opinion has played too large of a role in public policy, and what we end up hearing from our doctors. Our #WorldCancerDay podcast is out now and available everywhere you listen to podcasts💥 https://lnkd.in/dU-zycPS 💡For the first episode in our third season we discuss an action agenda to address the link between alcohol and cancer: How can communities advance cancer prevention through awareness and policy action on alcohol. 🚨Cancer due to alcohol affects millions of people every year but the alcohol industry still keeps people in the dark about the fact that their products cause 7 types of cancer. 🌐In Movendi International, one of our biggest priorities is to help prevent cancer through alcohol policy. Last year we launched the Be Loud For Change campaign to empower and engage communities to advocate for change by raising awareness about alcohol and cancer and by promoting action from policy makers. In the first year, we’ve seen some inspiring progress. 🎙️For this podcast conversation we have invited four guests to discuss how the alcohol industry keeps people in the dark about alcohol and cancer and what we can do about it. And we explore insights and lessons from both science and community action in countries such as 🇸🇪 🇺🇬 and 🇨🇴 to chart an ambitious way forward. 🫱🏽🫲🏾Our guests are Dr Nason Maani, Juliet Namukasa, Emil Juslin, and Dr Blanca Llorente. This podcast episode is part of Movendi International’s work to support an evidence-based approach to protecting more people from alcohol harm. #worldcancerday #alcoholharms #alcoholandcancer #loudforchange #alcoholissues #podcast #alcoholawareness #alcoholpolicy #cancerprevention #alcoholprevention
