I've posted about this project a few times now. But all of those posts were development stage posts. Now I'm here to share that we Access to Justice Lab launched a new evaluation in partnership with University of South Carolina Joseph F. Rice School of Law CHAMPS Clinic. We enrolled our first participant last week and will continue enrollment for a period of 2 years. In this evaluation we hope to understand the extent to which holistic legal and social work services provided to a parent experiencing poverty, and the legal and social challenges exacerbated by it, helps that parent avoid contact with the child welfare system. The definition of neglect for purposes of entry into this system is broad. That broad definition hopes to ensure the system can identify all kids in need. But, we suspect it also identifies families, that if given social supports, are not in need of interaction with the child welfare system. The CHAMPS clinic hears anecdotally that it helps families avoid the added responsibilities of complying with an investigation, especially those that would end up unfounded. This evaluation will test that theory. Our partnership with Shaniece Criss brings in the voices of community members and system-impacted individuals through a robust qualitative component. What a joy to work with such amazing partners to do such important work. This project is urgent. The reach of the child welfare system is vast. But, right now it may be reaching families that don't need it's services to the detriment of those that do. That may be harmful. We hope to contribute to the growing scholarship attempting to investigate this issue.

Thank you for sharing this exciting update. As a guardian ad litem since 2014, I see tremendous value in your work. Your efforts to refine how we identify and support families in need will prevent unwarranted stress for families and allow the child welfare system to allocate its resources more effectively.

Congrats - looking forward to the findings! The 'holistic' approach is so (practically) missing for families. When I did pro bono in DC Family Court the 'legal' problem was always just one of a long list of challenges faced by families in poverty.

A universal issue world wide. Such important research and findings should definitely be shared internationally
