Their request was clear: find sales reps who work in dealerships. When I suggested candidates with a rental background, they resisted. “Rental sales reps are hard and fast sellers. They’re too transactional.” We need candidates that have experience selling capital equipment… That know how to handle long sales cycles.” But I knew they were missing out on a talent pool with rich resources. 💰 The best salespeople aren’t the ones who sell one kind of product or service. They’re the ones who are curious (learners) and that adapt their relationship-building skills based on what’s needed. 💡 After a few days, I found a candidate from the rental side that I really believed in. He’d never sold capital equipment before But he was persistent, adaptable, and had a desire (passion, commitment, etc) to learn. My client gave him a shot. And it really opened their eyes. 💡 Since hiring him, he’s become a top performer. 💪 Watching him shine has convinced them to broaden their perspective and has opened new pools of talent. Now, they even encourage rental reps to apply to their open jobs! I know it’s easy to get stuck on hiring people with the “right” experience. But foundational to the “right” experience are the intrinsic qualities often overlooked by a specific domain knowledge (like capital equipment). High performance is about attitude, will to win, and other intrinsic qualities. 💃🏻 Sales makes the world go round. Real estate agents are sales people. Account managers are sales people. Recruiters are sales people. Directors of strategic partnerships are sales people. VPs of channel partnerships are sales people. I could list 50 more titles.. that do sales work.
