The Responsive Classroom Approach, developed by Northeast Foundation for Children (NEFC), aims to create nurturing school communities where social and academic learning are seamlessly integrated. The approach focuses on fostering students to be strong and ethical thinkers. Based on developmental and social learning theories, and years of classroom experience, seven key beliefs form the foundation of this approach. For more insights, refer to "The First Six Weeks of School" by Denton, Paula, and Roxann Kriete, published by Northeast Foundation for Children in 2000. #ResponsiveClassroom #Education #SocialLearning #AcademicDevelopment

Point of view: Something has to give Joanne Doris is an experienced teacher at a special school, but she’s had enough. It would be funny if it weren’t so serious. https://lnkd.in/e8qJ2pCA #Education #personalstories #PointofView #schools #specialneeds #specialschools #teachers

Because they are AMAZING! I went to school to be one and was totally transformed and inspired by my practicum experiences, readings and discussions. But, upon graduation, I struggled to get my license to transfer so I could be an NYC school counselor. (Reciprocity is a nightmare, especially if you’re seeking it in New York.) It was discouraging at first, but then I took on what I call ‘counseling-adjacent’ roles like dean and later college advisor. Along the way, I realized that having a counseling background was ideal for these roles, especially dean. It gave me a unique perspective and approach to dealing with behavior. Instead of simply responding with consequences or reprimand, I took a therapeutic approach. I sought to understand why the student was behaving the way they were. What were they trying to communicate? How could they be taught to get that need met in a different, more appropriate way? What moves could the adults make to anticipate and meet that need in the future in order to prevent this negative communication? Eventually, I began to understand that the power of my degree was not in how many students I could individually talk with and guide, but in how I could apply those techniques and understandings to reach the student body at large. Through writing advisory lessons, creating innovative programming and leading professional development sessions I was able to impact the entire school community helping cultivate spaces where students felt seen, heard and respected. I helped teachers feel better equipped to support students beyond delivery of their academic content. In other words, this little school counselor that “couldn’t” found a way that she could. I say all this to say that getting my school counseling training and license was one of the best decisions I ever made. I have also been blessed to train and work with equally motivated and talented school counselors. So I believe I have ample evidence to declare that school counselors ROCK & deserve appreciation everyday!
