🌍 Excited to share insights from our recent conversation with Jānis Volberts from Bellona Europa! We delved into the crucial role of European ports in industrial decarbonization, especially focusing on CCS solutions. 🎯 Aligned with the European Commission's ambitious target of 50 million tonnes per year of CO2 storage capacity by 2030, Bellona emphasizes the scope of ports to act as regional CO2 hubs. These hubs are vital for maximizing cost-efficiency and enabling shared infrastructure, particularly beneficial for small to medium-sized emitters that may lack direct access to maritime or pipeline infrastructure. 💡However, challenges persist, including economic burdens on SMEs and infrastructure gaps for stranded emitters. At LogiCarbon, we're tackling these challenges head-on by developing a digital tool to identify CO2 hubs and establish multi-modal routes. Did you see our project video launch at POLIS Network Conference 2024 in Stadt Karlsruhe, Land Baden-Württemberg this week? 🇩🇪 Don't worry if you weren't there! It's live on YouTube now! It's still early days in our own REFOCUS project but it was great to see "Supporting SUMPs" high up on the agenda and provoking thoughtful discussion. 🤔 We had the opportunity to hear from others engaged in the field, such as, the SCALE-UP Project that focuses on issues of multi-level governance and about the human resources support, provided by the Fachzentrum Nachhaltige Mobilitätsplanung Hessen (Sustainable Mobility Planning Hessen), to enable regional sustainable mobility planning! Our hosts, Land Baden-Württemberg & speaker Paula Kuss underscored the importance of working as a region to cut CO2 transport emissions by 55% by the year 2030. Their strategy? Ensure municipalities within the region are incentivised to use a transport model that evaluates the effectiveness of their Climate Mobility Plans. Sweden’s largest island, Gotland, has a ferry line to Kalmar County at the port of Oskarshamn, and there are currently initiatives in place to replace fossil fuels on this route. As a government, we remain committed to continuous improvement. With funding from the European Union, executed by UNDP, the Ministry of Public Utilities, Ministry of Public Utilities , Energy, Logistics & E-Governance (MPUELE), in partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Transport, and other stakeholders continues to pilot electric mobility initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) and carbon emissions.
