India's largest hydropower company, NHPC Limited, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Norwegian solar energy company Ocean Sun to advance floating solar power technology projects in the country. The plan is to initiate the construction of a 2 MW floating solar project in one of NHPC's existing hydropower reservoirs by the end of this year. Ocean Sun's technology utilises photovoltaic panels mounted on hydro-elastic membranes, offering advantages such as low material usage, efficient water cooling, and reduced water evaporation. There is enough solar energy for everyone Well, true, yes, maybe – however half of the day there is none. Variable Renewable Energy sources are key to the energy transition, and solar PhotoVoltaics is part of the solution. To overcome the intermittence (at night), solar PV needs to be combined with some other form of reliable energy source. Run of river hydropower is such an energy source. The unique combination of Floating Solar PV on Hydropower dams (to avoid using land) has demonstrated the potential for a unique interdependent renewable energy system. You can save water during the day, and the solar PV panels do not occupy scarce land areas – but rather float on its own water-battery. This week my Executive Master of Management in Energy, BI Norwegian Business School / IFP School Paris has brought me to the beautiful city of Antibes Juan-les-Pins to learn from the experts – attending the Solar-Hydro 2024 conference where FloatingSolar PV on Dam Reservoirs is the subject.

A recent study by Argonne National Laboratory identified about 1,800 sites in Alaska that could be suitable for closed-loop pumped storage hydropower, which is further complimented by a study conducted by National Renewable Energy Laboratory that determined closed-loop pumped storage is the greenest renewable technology for large-scale energy storage. Beyond Alaska's pumped storage potential, the state has been exploring a range of hydropower and marine & tidal energy applications, which provide a wealth of benefits, including helping remote and island communities shed dependence on diesel generation. NREL estimates that Alaska holds enormous tidal energy potential - enough to power 20 million homes. Earlier this year, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) awarded $76 million for new #hydropower in rural areas of Alaska and Washington. NHPC Limited Partners with Norwegian Firm Ocean Sun to Advance Floating Solar Technology in India In a significant step towards expanding renewable energy collaborations, the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (NHPC), India’s foremost hydropower developer, has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Norwegian firm Ocean Sun. The agreement, signed on Monday, aims to explore the potential of floating solar energy technologies in India. Ocean Sun, a provider of innovative solar technology, specializes in photovoltaic panels mounted on hydro-elastic membranes, a novel approach to harness solar energy on water surfaces. There is no doubt that we can and will deploy wind and solar power at a huge scale. But what happens when the sun does not shine and the wind does not blow? ☀ 🍃 The primary source of stored energy on electricity grids today - at well over 90% of energy stored - is pumped storage hydropower (PSH). But despite being proven and cost-effective, the deployment of PSH is not keeping pace with the increased demand for both long duration storage and the other services that are needed to provide system flexibility.
