Renewables First was a part of the recently concluded Energy Finance Conference 2024, hosted by IEEFA Asia Pacific in #KualaLumpur, Malaysia.
Our Director of Programs, Muhammad Mustafa Amjad, spoke on a panel about the role of 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬 (𝐃𝐄𝐑) 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧'𝐬 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.
Mustafa emphasized the importance of energy efficiency through optimal energy use, cost reductions, and innovative solutions. He highlighted NEECA- Pakistan's critical role in driving this change and stressed the need for behavioral shifts as the key driver of mainstreaming energy efficiency.
While addressing the recent solar boom in #Pakistan, he highlighted that China's solar manufacturing prowess coupled with Pakistan's geographic advantage, and favorable import policies have positioned DER as a cost-effective choice for many consumers. He further stressed that the current utility model, burdened by exorbitant capacity payments, a shrinking consumer base, and an overreliance on costly imported fuels, stands at a critical juncture, where it will have to either embrace modernization and adaptability, or risk becoming a relic in an increasingly decentralized energy landscape.
