Today, Carol Chaplin, our Board of Trustees chair, presented the prestigious Outstanding Service Award to U.S. Sen. Jacky Rosen for her proactive, bipartisan efforts supporting the Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO). Sen. Rosen has been a champion for the RTAA over the past year, chairing a new subcommittee on tourism, trade and export promotion, championing the application from RTAA that secured funding from the Airport Terminal Program, funding for a new Airport Rescue Fire Fighting apparatus, and sponsoring legislation to provide financial stability for airports like RNO. Sen. Rosen understands RNO's role as an economic driver for northern Nevada and is setting us up for success for generations to come. We thank Sen. Rosen’s regional representative, Abbey Pike, for accepting the award today on her behalf.

This is such a good book.
"Victories are not won by the many but by the valiant." - Hernán Cortés "What nation that has ruled the world has never faced defeat? What renowned captain, I ask, ever returned home because he lost a battle or was expelled from a town? Not one, certainly, for without perseverance, they would not have conquered or triumphed." I've been engrossed in a book I can't put down: "Conquistador: Hernán Cortés, King Montezuma, and the Last Stand of the Aztecs" by Buddy Levy. This is one of the most fascinating accounts of this period in history, and I'm disappointed I didn't start learning more about it until recently.

MY BUSINESS HELD THE ROYAL WARRANT TO SUPPLY HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN.... How we got there is key. It is also one of many business related stories within the book, 'McMaster and Commander The Business of Winning', that I co-authored with Aberdeen Legend and Gothenburg Great, John McMaster. As is related in the book, supporting others to act on their initiative is key and as is mentioned '....allowing individuals within any business to have a degree of free flow and empowerment to take actions as they see fit for the benefit of the business'. Of course not every initiative will be successful. That is just the way it is. However if you don't try, then you'll never know. Show me a team, business or organisation that is successful, I'll show you a team, business or organisation that has overcome many challenges/obstacles to get there. We look forward to both you and some of your people joining us. 'Benchmarking' which in its early days was referred to as 'Interfirm Comparisons' has proved to be one of the most powerful ways being able to set 'stretched Goals' which you know from your own observations are achievable because you have actually seen it. The source does not have to be in your own industry either. Many KPIs are not industry specific. for example, success in competitive tendering, Accidents per head of population on the Payroll, Absenteeism, response to Job Ads etc. People in different industries often do these things in different way as they are on a different communications loop. One the other side of the World they are even more likely to be different but these concepts usually do not have a passport! #ceo #managementdevelopment #traininganddevelopment #tqm #qualityimprovement
The DHI Industrial #Qualitytours of Japan began in 1980 following our hugely successful conference held at the Institute of Directors in London and co-chaired by Professor Ishikawa. Key supporting speakers, apart from myself, David Hutchins who organised the event, included Professor Sasaki, Rt Hon Reginald Eyre (UK Minister for Industry), Admiral Spikernell (President of the UK Defence Quality Assurance Board), and @Walter Goldsmith (Chairman of Black & Decker). Over three weeks, our itinerary included visits to Nissan, Honda, Toyota, Komatsu and others, resulting in some extraordinary experiences… David Hutchins, 2024 Read More… https://lnkd.in/dE-Gqp49 #japanqualitytour #manufacturingexcellence #toyota #leanthinking #innovativestrategies #japantravel #industrialtour #japatour #ngkspark #automotiveinnovation #qualitymanagement #futureofmanufacturing

Retired Marine and former Corporate leader. I tell stories of my corporate life to help others better understand the true culture of large corporations.
A veteran asked me the difference in my Marine Corps peers and corporate peers. Read to the end because their is a twist. The picture below is of what is known as Hamburger Hill during the Vietnam War, and is an encapsulation of the will of a group of men to overcome tremendous adversity. These heroes overcome for many reasons but, teamwork is one of the major reasons for their success. Every American on that hill supported each other and wanted the man beside them to succeed. In corporate America, everyone is a 1099/individual contractor. If the company mission is to sell XX number of widgets and each salesman is given a sales goal, each 1099 that meets goal benefits for each 1099 that misses the goal. There is no incentive to help anyone. It's beneficial to withhold information that could help someone achieve their sales goal. It's beneficial to bad mouth the other 1099's to the boss. It's beneficial to pit your team against the other teams. It's beneficial to criticize the other salesmen to their team. The goal for each salesman is to make it to the top of the hill alone, and pushing others back down the hill as ascending. Here's the twist. My experience is the best performing salesman doesn't get the promotion. The person most liked will get the promotion. If you get to the top with your integrity completely in line, I've only seen the one's half way up the hill, but well liked, get promoted because they were throwing spears at your back as you were ascending the hill and you likely never knew you were bleeding. When I was an active duty Marine, I had many disagreements with my peers, but I can't recall one EVER bad-mouthing me to my boss, and intentionally sabotaging my team's success. In corporate America, when my peers worked in separate locations, I was aware of at least half bad mouthing others to our boss. When my peers and I worked in the same location, everyone of them was bad mouthing the other to the boss and/or to each others team. That's the difference in Marine Corps peers and corporate peers. #veterans #veteranshelpingveterans #marines #leadership

I recently spent time at Joint Base Charleston with a Tuskegee Airman, Lt Eugene Richardson, and local Tuskegee Airmen historian Quincy Magwood. I heard so many fascinating stories. Dr. Richardson Airman completed flight training, but WWII ended before he deployed. I escorted him to the Boeing C-17 simulator and heard later that he had flown the simulator well. I asked him when the last time he’d flown was. He said, “1947.” I was shocked. In my ignorance, I asked him why he didn’t fly for the airlines. I won’t forget his look and simple response. Blacks weren’t allowed to fly for the airlines. Dr. Richardson spoke at the annual “Accelerating the Legacy” event and was so proud that his son could have a full career as an airline pilot—an opportunity never afforded him. Quincy Magwood told me that of the 992 Tuskegee Airman pilots, only two broke through the barrier of racism to become pilots. One was Lt. Col. Robert Ashby, a fellow Archer-Ragsdale Tuskegee Airmen chapter member. I was blessed to interview Lt. Col. Ashby before he died. There’s a whole lot of anti-DEI nonsense going viral about the qualifications of black pilots. The truth is that the greatest black pilots ever known battled to be seen as qualified to fly in airline cockpits. At that time and now, some people question their ability/qualifications because they don’t think black people should be airline pilots/captains. It has nothing to do with their training and experience. #airlines #dei #diversity #diversityequityandinclusion #unitedairlines #blackpilots #airlinepilots #airlines #usaf #usairforce #airforce #tuskegeeairmen #legacy #racism #pilots #obap #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #book #books #mustread #interview https://bubli.sh/SjWH5q7

In September, I’ll be retiring after serving out Nation after +20 years in the US Military. The one thing I’ve learned from great leaders in OUR NATION is to always focus on the “greater good”, take care of your team, and remember it’s not about you. In our society today, many have forgotten what being a leader means. It is a position of trust. Trust given by constituents, troops, or people at your place of employment. Your position is your job, and your leadership needs to be based upon the fact it’s the acceptance of those below you that you’re going to propose and do the right things, for the right reasons, for the “greater good”, and not for your own selfish reasons nor personal gains. It means working across party lines and internal office politics. It means being an ethical American. Ethical to the standards Our Forefathers used to build this great Nation. Ethical to the standards previous leaders of our Nation and organizations used to keep us moving forward. Remember. Without strong leadership and ethical values, organizations or nations devolve into chaos, become ripe for the picking, and get overthrown. So step up and let your legacy be the example of an ethical leader following and improving established fair and equitable rules.
