On the 1st day of my 1st job, I told my boss I wanted the opportunity to work internationally (bold, I know).
I was in a rotational program at a financial services company, fresh out of college, and eager to excel.
We had just finished a month-long orientation program where we heard from senior leaders across the firm.
👉 Key takeaway 1: Ask for what you want.
👉 Key takeaway 2: International rotations were a thing.
So, yes, I came in HOT.
I probably could’ve gone about it more tactfully,
But, at the end of the day -
It worked.
5 months after starting, my manager helped me land my 2nd rotation - in London.
✅ I'd let him know what I wanted,
✅ I asked what it would take to get there, and
✅ I worked to prove myself and build a reputation.
If I’d waited to prove myself before asking,
❌ I might’ve missed the opportunity (or had to wait).
If I hadn’t let him know my interests,
❌ He wouldn’t have advocated with his network.
If I didn’t have a clear goal,
❌ I wouldn’t have been as motivated.
❌ I wouldn't have known where to focus.
❌ I would've ended up in any random rotation.
Don’t let your career happen to you.
💥 Define your goals,
💥 Share them with others,
💥 Put in the work to get there
Don’t just work hard, hoping to get what you DESERVE -
Because even if you end up getting SOMETHING,
It might not actually be what you WANT.
