Sometimes comparing ourselves to others can make us feel like crap. And other times, the comparison can help highlight something missing in our lives. In my case, every time I heard about someone moving out of Toronto, I felt something pull at me. Living abroad during and after university, travelling a lot for work and fun, and growing up in a small town surrounded by nature has had me wanting to see what living outside the city could be like. I first wrote about leaving Toronto in 2018 (in my journal). I dreamt of being asked to relocate for work. Or my husband being relocated for work. But it didn’t happen and our jobs had us working downtown Toronto five days a week. Then the pandemic hit and we relocated to my hometown for 4 months. I started looking at houses in my hometown. My parents were looking at houses for us. But, my sister-in-law had wise advice - don’t make a huge decision like moving during such an incredible time of uncertainty. She was right. Three years later more friends had left the city and the pull could no longer be denied. This summer the Talbots are leaving Toronto. We are moving to a small town an hour outside of Toronto. It’s exciting. And sad. This is the longest I have ever lived in a house. We have phenomenal friends and neighbours here. My kids aren’t thrilled. We’ve had to have some tough conversations and let the emotions flow (hubby and I included). My husband will now have to commute for work 1-2 days a week. But we are choosing the life we want. More nature and less busyness and noise. A smaller community. A pool and a yard (hey some things are superficial). Moving is hard. Change is messy. But I know it is going to be worth it.
