The second Monday in October is dedicated to honoring and celebrating Indigenous People's Day, commemorating the history and culture of Native American people. In 1990, the International Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations in the Americas, sponsored by the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, began discussing replacing Columbus Day in the United States with a celebration that would later be known as Indigenous People's Day.
