It's #NationalCareersWeek so here's a quick peek at some of the mentoring and support into careers in architecture which we've conducted in the last year. How do you get an internship? 👇👇 It's National Intern Day, and while some of your time as an intern will be spent confused and sleepy, much more of it will be spent learning from professionals in your field and getting a deeper understanding of your coursework for when you get back to school. But how do you get an internship?💼 I had the privilege of meeting two interns yesterday who told me two very different stories about their journey to the workplace. 🏈 The tailgate story - While majoring in #chemicalengineering he went to career fair and applied online for internships and co-ops, but after a year of no bites, he made a habit of attending on campus events where local professionals were known to show up. At an Engineering department football tailgate event, he made a good impression on an engineer who ended up putting in a good word for him at his first internship. Now he works full time for the same company. 📐 The numbers story - He majored in Physics at a university with NO career fair. He applied exclusively online for opportunities. After years of no interviews, he graduated in physics, and with no full time offers, sent out hundreds more applications, including to a little company he'd heard was good to work for from a friend's dad. He got an interview, and became a post-graduation summer intern. He's loving his experience so far. Make your #engineeringdegree count and graduate with multiple job offers in hand. 🌟 My Journey to Landing My First Internship 🌟 Continuing my series on my FAU College of Engineering & Computer Science experiences, I want to share how I landed my first internship this summer. My journey began with a call with Erin at Florida Atlantic University's career center, where I met Golden. They liked my resume template (thanks Reddit!) and gave great advice. Erin asked about my dream job, and I mentioned tech but also couldn't resist talking about Inter Miami CF (call me!). Determined to be more social, I attended a Welcome Back Fest for engineers and met Giovanni. He introduced me to SHPE FAU and NSBE Professionals | National Society of Black Engineers, and I met Elenamaria and Mckenzie, the SHPE and NSBE presidents. That evening, I worked in the study rooms at East Engineering, met Giovanni again, and joined his study group. That same night, I attended a SWE FAU workshop, after meeting Sienna along with Aaron and Quang. I attended all FAU career fairs, participated in SHPE, NSBE, and SWE events, and refined my resume with help from Quang and Sienna. Thanks to all recruiters and mentors for their honest feedback. Attending the Society of Women Engineers and SHPE national conferences gave me invaluable experience, making FAU career fairs a breeze the following semester. In spring, I continued attending FAU career fairs and prepared for the NSBE national conference. Each workshop, resume review, and mock interview honed my skills. I connected with my mentor Nikhil, who referred me for an interview at Paradigm Senior Services. After enthusiastic interviews with Yossi, Jason, and Melvin, I received a soft offer on the way home. This journey taught me to seize opportunities and put myself out there, preparing me for real-world challenges. Reflecting on this journey, FAU's network and resources were crucial. The support from the career center, student organizations, and mentors were instrumental. SHPE and NSBE events provided connections and lessons that prepared me for the internship at Paradigm. The internship has been fantastic over the last month, and I've learned a tremendous amount. I'm eager to apply what I've learned, grateful for the support that brought me here, and ready for future growth. Thank you to everyone who played a part in my journey.
