Reflecting on my time as a licensed Real Estate Agent, now with Sotheby’s International Realty Canada, leaving behind my friends and colleagues in the Insurance Industry proved to be a challenging transition- one that still resonates. However, pursuing real estate was an irresistible dream, as I firmly believe that change is the catalyst for personal and professional growth. The adversities that we face define us. It is never easy, and it isn’t always pretty, but when we look back at our achievements, it can be quite remarkable. While my entire career has predominantly been in “sales”, I have always been uncomfortable with “selling”. Go figure! I have come to understand this discomfort and my push-back to the sales culture because my true self is always about the people. My happiness comes from cultivating relationships, driven by genuine curiosity (which some call “my interrogation” methods 🤷🏼♀️) wanting to listen to stories, and learning about who someone truly is. I have a deep and authentic care for people. The journey has been demanding, yet immensely rewarding. I extend heartfelt gratitude to my unwavering support system - family, friends, mentors, colleagues and clients. Your role in my journey is appreciated beyond my ability to properly articulate just how much. The path featured remarkable days alongside lots of really hard days, and many moments of self-doubt while venturing into the unknown, wondering if anyone would support me in my new business. In retrospect, my success is owed to every single person who took a chance on me, and believed in my capabilities. The 2024 Women’s Council of Realtors Officer Installation. Now I can go on and on, on how this organization have helped me become a better leader in my industry and a better person but I’m going to keep it short and sweet. I want to share my background story on how The Women’s Council of Realtors have changed my life. When I first joined this organization, I was a brand new agent, I didn’t know anyone and no-one knew me. Now, fast forward two years later. I’m a top producing realtor and soon to be broker owner, with a large network of agents, lawyers, home inspectors, banks, etc, all at the age of 27. With the amount of success that I have encountered throughout my years of being in the real estate industry, it would be foolish of me not to recognize the Women’s Council of Realtors as part of that success. I’ve had quite the time serving my two terms as one of the youngest First Vice President and Membership Director’s for the Gwinnett Network. I can honestly say that it’s been an overall learning experience and I want to thank everyone who supported me along my journey. But all great things must come to an end. Even though I will not re rejoining next year, I pray for much success for the incoming board and the years to come!! BROKER SPOTLIGHT Jeff Berkman We caught up with Jeff Berkman, Director out of Atlanta, to learn about market insights and who inspires him: 1. What do you enjoy about the industry? Hospitality, by its very nature, is an industry full of individuals who like people and enjoy providing service. Many of the people I’ve met over the course of my career have become friends. My clients (and customers) tend to be people I enjoy working with and hopefully enjoy working with me/HWE. Because our industry is so specialized, we all seem to know each other. This means that the line between customer and client is a fine one. Almost daily I’m on the phone with a client, discussing a deal we are selling or financing for them when the call pivots to a different property we are selling. At this point the person on the other end of the line switches from client to customer. 2. Which markets do you think have potential of the next few years? I believe that eventually everything returns to the mean. We’ve obviously seen unprecedented growth in demand and rate for leisure-oriented properties over the past few years. At the same time, full-service urban hotels and properties in urban markets San Francisco, Chicago and Seattle have underperformed falling out of favor with investors. Most institutional buyers subscribe to shorter hold periods. For these groups, there is tremendous risk in buying out-of-favor assets or in lagging markets, but for capital with a longer ownership horizon like family offices and owner/operators, outsized returns will be made by those who buy first and have the patience to wait out the storm. 3. Who in your life inspires you? I had the fortune of working with Mark Elliott for 15 years. To those I meet from outside of our industry, I explain that he was the Michael Jordan of hotel sales. I think that helps put into context his ability, drive and place in the history of hotel sales. I believe Mark’s most unique gift, was his ability to focus his attention on the person he was with and make that person feel special. His daughter Brynn called it being ‘radically present’. Mark seemed to live on a plane. Even those of us who worked just down the hall might go weeks without seeing him. Everyone always needed five minutes and when it was your turn, he had the ability to tune everything else out and focus, whether you were a client, friend, or new acquaintance. I won’t ever forget this quality of Mark’s, and I strive to be as present in my personal and professional life. I do a class every month for my Real Estate brokerage firm entitled, "Professional Standards" it is part of our new agent training. It occurs on day 2 of a 10 day training. On occasion I jokingly refer to it as "Appropriate adult behavior for people with a Real Estate license" In this class I lovingly mention the first line of our very preamble..."under all is the land" because I am a sucker for high ideals and noble purposes. I speak to the 17 articles of our Code of Conduct and point out in great detail the higher road of this noteworthy profession. I let them know that their trade associations are strong and mighty. The California Association of Realtors is the second largest trade association in the country, second only to the National Association of Realtors. That is a lot of power and that is your association. It is important to be a member in good standing and it is a small fee to pay to be apart of this great industry. So now what? Now what do I say? The National Association of Realtors was established on May 13, 1908 in Chicago. There have been many changes since then, too many to mention here, but well worth knowing. In the last 25 years that I have been in Real Estate I have seen amazing leaders rise to power to make a difference I am loyalist, and an optimist, I love this industry. 66% of the membership in the National Association of Realtors are women, and they are some of the finest people I know. So now what? Now what do I say? I say, pay attention, do your job, find your voice, make a difference and then pay your dues. I feel we need to redefine what it means to be a "member in good standings" from the top down, no longer from the bottom up. I am not going anywhere and I refuse to be silent, dormant, or well behaved. It is unacceptable to turn a deaf ear to predatory behavior and the unnecessary unwanted nuances of an old boys club. Those days are gone. More women need to step up, speak up, and remain curious about what will happen when we take our place at the table and speak ourselves into the room. One question, one story, one day at a time. Things won't change over night, but they will change, they have to because its time and we aren't going anywhere.
