Recruiters and hiring managers DO check! -- Bulk up your resume by showing off extracurricular activities that show leadership, Greek life, committees and social events, volunteer work, internships, projects, and senior class work that emphasize applicable work skills. -- Build your LinkedIn presence: grow your network and connect with friends, colleagues, and professors. Include your resume and showcase skills. Join trade associations connected to your major and field. Repost articles associated with your job of interest. -- Craft your resume and cover letter to each individual job – make it personal and professional. Use AI for ideas only - do not use it to write your documents (recruiters will know!). -- After applying for a position, contact the hiring manager and express your interest. This greatly improves the chance of your application being given a second look. -- Sharpen interviewing skills by practicing essential questions and know how to present your elevator pitch seamlessly. An interviewer will most likely start the conversation with, “tell me about yourself”. -- Write a personal thank you email after every interview. The message should be concise and personal to your conversation. Ask for next steps in the interview process to show continued interest in the role. -- Attend career fairs, join job sites and network with friends, neighbors, family members and more. As a recent graduate, here are some strategies to help you find employment: Set Realistic Expectations: Understand that finding your dream job right out of school might be challenging. Be flexible and consider opportunities that may not align perfectly with your ideal role. For example, if you’re interested in a financial analyst position but a company is hiring project assistants, consider starting there and working your way up. Craft an Impressive Resume: Your resume is your first impression with potential employers. Highlight your education, relevant coursework, internships, and any other experiences that demonstrate your skills and abilities. Tailor your resume for each job application. Identify Job Opportunities: Look beyond online job boards. Attend career fairs, networking events, and industry conferences. Connect with alumni, professors, and professionals in your field. Sometimes, personal connections can lead to job openings. Enhance Your Professionalism: Polish your online presence. Update your LinkedIn profile, create a professional email address, and ensure your social media accounts reflect a positive image. In college, I wish I learned about the challenges of finding a job post-graduation, including the struggles, roadblocks, and lessons about the workforce. As someone currently struggling to secure employment, I realize my mistake in assuming a degree would suffice; now, companies seek experience, often obtained through internships, which I lacked until after graduation. Many companies seem to prefer hiring students who have not yet graduated, leaving post-grad job searches feeling hopeless. Interviews can be daunting, especially for those prone to blanking out on unprepared questions like myself. Utilizing mock interviews at the career center can provide some assistance, though the process remains nerve-wracking. Despite conducting interviews and reaching out through platforms like LinkedIn and email, I often receive no response, which is disheartening. My advice for job-seeking graduates is to persevere through the frustration and uncertainty, as resilience is key to navigating this challenging landscape. For further guidance, I recommend reaching out to college career centers, which can offer resume feedback and tailored advice. Despite the obstacles, giving up is not an option; rather, it's an opportunity to learn and grow! You got this!
