Publicly traded gym brands posted mixed results to close out Q2 ’24. • Life Time Inc.’s Q2 YoY revenue grew 19%, net income by 210%, and memberships by 5.4%. • Planet Fitness revenue rose by 5% and net income 11%, but memberships inched 0.5%. • Xponential Fitness recorded a 1% revenue drop and 150% decrease in net income. I hear this all the time from gym owners or their staff "I can't sell", "I'm not a salesperson", "PT's don't make great sales people".... The list could go on, but lets be honest for 1 minute. That is utter bulls***!!! Yes its true, some people are better at it naturally, take Jordon Belfort for instance. Now, most of us won't have the gift of the gab like him and his like. However, you don't need to be to sell gym memberships, personal training or SGPT packages. You simply don't Consider this for a moment ✅ We work in an industry where "selling" our services is desirable for the consumer ✅ We work in hospitality which is about people and getting them excited ✅ Health is no longer a luxury ✅ Everyone has the ability to talk to others Where this often goes wrong is: ❌ Lack of training and understanding. Provide your team with the skills and their confidence will flourish ❌ Lack of process. If you provide the tools and a systematic process it takes away the fear. For instance use scripts ❌ Regular feedback is important. When a client doesn't join talk through the tour and understand why. ❌ Managers don't walk the walk. Don't just stand back and let your team do it. Show them how it's done. ❌ No reward. You have to celebrate success, especially early. Sales is about confidence firstly. ❌ No defined client journey. Your team need to know what your brand means and what the clients can expect. ❌ An over emphasis on facilities. yes your facilities may be nice, but it's not what sells your club. Don't let your team get carried away by shiny kit We don't really sell our services in the true nature of things. We are not selling a car or insurance, there are no hard-selling strategies that are required. People BUY from people they TRUST, especially in fitness. So teach your team how to engage, build rapport and ask questions to understand and you will be able to make even the most unsure member of staff and good salesperson. One final point. Only a rare few are born salespeople. The rest of us have to learn it, so if you were to do one thing to improve conversions from your whole team it would be to train them properly to be confident in the process. This presents an opportunity to invest in nurturing your existing member base. Fostering loyalty among your members should be a top priority. In a market saturated with choices, it's essential to remind people why they chose your facility for their fitness and wellness journey. Here are some actionable suggestions: ✅ Implement a rewards program offering benefits at local businesses. Partnering with coffee shops is a great starting point. For instance, members could enjoy a 10% discount by showing their membership tag or workout results to the barista.
