Colorado Governor Jared Polis will sign our "Consumer Right to Repair Digital Equipment" law on Tuesday, May 28. It goes far beyond just consumer electronics -- including business and government IT, home appliances, and bans malicious parts pairing. Colorado has already passed Wheelchair and Agricultural right to repair laws -- making it the most repair-friendly state in the nation.

Oregon's Governor, Tina Kotek, has enacted a right-to-repair law Like similar laws introduced in Minnesota and California, Chapter 69 (SB 1596) requires consumer electronic equipment manufacturers to allow consumers and independent electronics businesses to purchase the parts and equipment required to make their own device #repairs. However, Oregon is the first state to ban "#PartsPairing," meaning a manufacturer’s practice of using software to identify component parts through a unique identifier. Current devices are excluded from the ban, which only applies to gadgets manufactured after 1 January 2025. https://lnkd.in/eBJfHsP7 #repairability #circularity

Good News: Oregon legislature just signed a "right to repair" law. It is the 4th state in the US to do so (following California, Minnesota and New York). It is also the first law to ban device manufacturers from using "parts pairing" to dictate what replacement components can be used. Part pairing is a practice manufacturers use to prevent replacement components from working unless the company’s software approves them. Essentially it is limiting repairability options. Current devices are excluded from the ban. #righttorepair #electronics #ewaste https://lnkd.in/gNnhZbqR

Starting July 1st, 2024, consumers in California and Minnesota will have the right to repair their own devices. This is another step forward in the Right to Repair movement, ensuring that more of us can fix our devices and keep them out of landfills. It's been over a decade since Repair.org and the Right to Repair movement have fought for laws that make repairs more affordable and accessible . A right to repair law grants owners the right to fix their devices, including computers, appliances, and equipment, at their own will. This right challenges previous limitations such as manufacturer's maintenance service manuals and requirements, access to tools and components, and software barriers. With these new laws now in effect in California, Colorado, Minnesota, and New York, – and additional legislation set to take effect in Oregon and Colorado – nearly 20% of the U.S. population will be covered by Right to Repair protections. Let's celebrate #RepairIndependenceDay and continue to advocate for the right to repair across the country. Consumers deserve the right to fix their stuff without unnecessary restrictions, higher consumer costs, and increased e-waste. #RightToRepair #ConsumerRights #Sustainability

This is really disappointing to see and a sad day for the automotive industry as a whole. Under the current administration, the government has effectively decided that the automotive aftermarket and tuning industry is the enemy now. This is a perfect example of why the automotive industry and the thousands of jobs it created for American workers, will continue to evaporate in front of their eyes. Bad legislation will be the death the automotive industry in the United States and globally, if things continue in this direction too. Instead of forging a better and more inclusive path forward, that would lead to better and even improved emissions on older vehicles still on the road, the EPA is still going after tuners, instead of working with them. What if one of those tuners, actually had figured out a way to not only broker peace between the tuners and the EPA, but how to create a better system that would create thousands of new jobs in the process, while simultaneously supercharging the automotive aftermarket, all while improving emissions across the board?? Sadly and unsurprisingly, much like they have decided with the rest of the world it appears, that war is only path forward. And we are all the worse off for it too. This is definitely not the way…

Oregon Just Struck a Blow to Parts Pairing and Won a Decade of Repair Support Today, the US fight for our Right to Repair won an enormous victory: Oregon’s governor just signed an electronics Right to Repair law that not only protects owners’ right to get our stuff fixed anywhere we want but also limits the anti-repair practices of parts pairing. And it goes further back than any bill ever has before—for everything except smartphones, manufacturers must make parts, tools, documentation, and software available for products produced as far back as 2015. (For smartphones, the bill applies retroactively to July 1, 2021, the same date as the Minnesota and California bills that go into effect this July.) The state House passed Oregon’s Right to Repair Act (SB 1596) on March 4 by a 42–13 margin. The bill passed the state Senate on Feb. 20, with a vote of 25–5. Today (Weds. March 27), it has been signed into law by Gov. Tina Kotek. “I’m beyond proud of my home state for passing the strongest-yet electronics Right to Repair bill,” said Kyle Wiens, iFixit CEO, who grew up in Oregon. “By applying to most products made after 2015, this law will open up repair for the things Oregonians need to get fixed right now. And by limiting the repair-restricting practices of parts pairing, it protects fixing for years to come. We won’t stop fighting until everyone, everywhere has these rights.” In its parts pairing and retroactivity provisions, the Oregon law goes beyond all that have passed so far. “Oregon has improved on Right to Repair laws in California, Minnesota and New York by making sure that consumers have the choice of buying new parts, used parts or third-party parts for their gadgets and gizmos,” said Executive Director of Repair.org - The Repair Association, Gay Gordon-Byrne. Oregon’s governor signs right-to-repair law that bans ‘parts pairing’ Oregon Governor Tina Kotek has now signed one of the strongest US right-to-repair bills into law after it passed the state legislature several weeks ago by an almost 3-to-1 margin. Oregon’s SB 1596 will take effect next year, and, like similar laws introduced in Minnesota and California, it requires device manufacturers to allow consumers and independent electronics businesses to purchase the necessary parts and equipment required to make their own device repairs. Oregon’s rules, however, are the first to ban “parts pairing” — a practice manufacturers use to prevent replacement components from working unless the company’s software approves them. #Oregon #RightToRepair #PartsPairing #repair #technology #tech
