With my daughter Anna starting a summer internship at Brillect this week, I'm reminded of a quote that came across my computer a few weeks ago, "Be the person you needed when you were younger." In the next few weeks, college-age interns will be starting in offices everywhere. What if we all went beyond the basic, 'Hello, nice to meet you," to honestly share those pieces of advice or insight that would have made a difference when we were starting out? It doesn't have to be big to be impactful. Schedule a lunch with them, take the time to meet with them, and encourage them to ask questions. No matter our role, we all have something to offer those just starting their careers. I'd love to hear from others with ideas or advice on how to pay it forward in the coming days and weeks. What advice made a difference in your career? What have you done to encourage or support an intern or young professional at your office? #mentorship #internships #careerdevelopment #payitforward

Assistant Director - Strategy and Operations | Enabling Digital Excellence in Education | Driving Innovation at Center for Digital Learning | Lean Six Sigma Black Belt
After the rain stops, carrying an umbrella becomes a burden for everyone. Similarly, in many corporate settings, the loyalty of interns often faces a similar fate. I've noticed a concerning trend in several ed-tech companies. Interns work hard for three months, delivering results, only to receive a piece of paper and then watch as new interns take their place for the next three months. This practice is fundamentally flawed and needs to be addressed. The value that interns bring should be acknowledged and retained, fostering a culture of loyalty and growth within the organization. Let's work towards ending this cycle and promoting a more sustainable and mutually beneficial approach to internships. #Internship #CorporateCulture #CareerDevelopment

As the semester comes to a close, I approach the end of my internship at New Yorkers for Clean Power (NYCP). Although I am sad to see it end, I am thankful that I had the opportunity to be an intern at NYCP. I certainly learned a lot from this experience and I have learned a few major takeaways. Time management is one of the most important skills that I learned from this internship. Since I had coursework on top of my responsibilities as an intern, I had to learn how to manage my time wisely, and I did so by creating schedules and setting goals for activities that I needed to complete by a certain date. As an intern interested in renewable energy but without experience, I made a few mistakes and had some misunderstandings about the field. I learned that making these mistakes is okay and that it is important to constantly ask for feedback from others with more experience to improve. My last big takeaway, and one that I believe is important for my peers to understand, is that unpaid internships can be just as rewarding as paid internships. While making money is great, experience is significantly more important in the long run and should prioritized when looking for internships. When I was made aware of the opportunity to intern at NYCP, I was going to brush it off because it was unpaid. However, I applied anyway, and I certainly do not have any regrets as the experience was truly valuable.
