The Community Street project aimed to create a cohesive, safe, and welcoming public realm. The strategy, developed by DK-CM Architects and informed by extensive co-design and engagement with residents, focused on enhancing connectivity along the Westway, addressing pedestrian difficulties, and improving visibility and perceptions of safety. This vibrant area spans from Acklam Road to Stable Way, encompassing significant sites like the Westway Sports Centre, Maxilla Walk at the Grenfell Memorial Wall, and the Portobello Canopy. TRILUX's innovative lighting solutions were instrumental in achieving these goals, providing visually pleasing and compliant lighting that met the diverse needs of this dynamic community space. Our solution consisted of bespoke LED donut-shaped luminaires, Combial LED floodlights, robust recyclable catenary luminaires, and Faciella projectors. Westway Trust, Community Street Project Manager, praised the outcomes: "TRILUX's lighting solutions have significantly uplifted the evening landscape, making the area more desirable and secure for community activities." #TRILUX #UrbanLighting #LightingDesign

Join us at the AIA|DC District Architecture Center for the Exhibition Opening- reIMAGINE: Creating New Uses for Old Buildings. Among the DC-area buildings featured is the SK&A #AdaptiveReuse Press House Warehouse project. (Learn more: https://lnkd.in/esPmrRsv) "This exhibition presents 19 buildings in the Washington, DC, area that architects have recently reimagined, bringing new life to structures that might otherwise have been doomed to disuse, decay, and ultimately the wrecking ball. Any building that survives long enough is likely to undergo regular maintenance, occasional restoration, or possibly comprehensive renovation. Even so, some buildings inevitably become obsolete due to changes in business practices, technology, demographics, or other factors. Fortunately, many structures facing obsolescence can be converted to purposes other than the ones for which they were designed—a process known as adaptive reuse. Essentially a form of recycling at a large scale, adaptive reuse offers numerous potential advantages over new construction, including environmental, economic, and social benefits. We welcome your presence at this opening and invite you to navigate through all 19 projects featured, and learn more about the benefits of adaptive reuse. Drinks and light hors d’oeuvres will be served." 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 | 𝗠𝗰𝗞𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 Victoria, Australia The recently completed McKellar Centre’s design directly responds to the Royal Commission recommendations into Victoria’s Mental Health System. An acute mental healthcare facility, the design needed to balance demanding performance requirements with the complex needs of its patients. To ensure success, BG Architecture co-designed the space alongside clinicians, nurses and those with lived experience of mental illness. Offering all patients natural views across three internal courtyards, the design orients itself to maximise access to daylight. Two key factors in creating a calming atmosphere and promoting health and wellbeing. Where There Is A Will, There Is A Way. ‘An idiom used to convey that if there is desire and determination to do something, a method will be found to accomplish it.’ Let’s put the video clip below into context. There is substantial need for safe, energy-efficient, and affordable housing, particularly in rural and tribal communities where the shortage disproportionately impacts low-income households. The U.S. is facing an overall shortfall of approximately 3.8 million homes across all income levels. This includes affordable housing in both rural and urban areas. There is a nationwide gap of 7.3 million affordable rental homes for extremely low-income households, with rural areas being significantly impacted. On American Indian reservations, 68,000 housing units are needed to replace severely inadequate housing and eliminate overcrowding. In rural and tribal areas, only 44 adequate affordable rental homes exist per 100 low-income renter households, indicating a major deficit in housing stock. These figures highlight the substantial need for safe, energy-efficient, and affordable housing, particularly in rural and tribal communities where the shortage disproportionately impacts low-income households. Addressing this gap requires a combination of new construction, rehabilitation of existing housing, and sustainable funding strategies. The work highlighted below being led by TallWood Design Institute partners at the College of College of Forestry at Oregon State University and University of Oregon helps us not only imagine a future, but is an actual method to take ‘will’ and find a ‘way’ to make significant inroads into meeting this need.
What if there was a way to quickly build affordable, high-quality, sustainable homes to support workforce housing, natural disaster recovery and more? TallWood Design Institute (a partnership between Oregon State University and University of Oregon) and the Institute for Health in the Built Environment are working on a project to help accomplish just that! This fall, visitors toured the latest innovation in sustainable housing: a prototype of a two-story, two-bedroom house made entirely of mass plywood panels (MPP) that was set up in the A.A. "Red" Emmerson Advanced Wood Products Lab on our Corvallis campus. At 760 square feet, this innovative prototype is designed to serve as part of a “cottage cluster" or as an accessory dwelling unit. The home is prefabricated for efficiency and can be flat-packed and shipped, streamlining construction and reducing costs. The test house demonstrates the thermal and seismic resilience of mass timber while paving the way for affordable, sustainable housing. #masstimber #sustainability #affordablehousing
