Works are now underway to transform popular Bayswater park Riverside Gardens into a thriving urban forest. Bordering the Swan River, the park’s transformation will be undertaken in partnership with Emerge Associates and Greening Australia, and will be the first Nature in Cities program in Perth. The first stage of the development will be within the four hectares of open grassland on the eastern side of the parkland between the Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary and Memorial Drive, while the second stage will expand the forest to include a further two hectares. Both stages are projected to be completed in 2026. The urban forest’s final concept design was created with community feedback, and includes the addition of over 75,000 trees, plants and shrubs – increasing the suburb’s tree canopy, supporting biodiversity, and reducing the urban heat island effect. Water quality in the Bayswater Brook catchment is also anticipated to improve.

Lioncourt Homes has marked the next milestone in delivering 120 new homes in Rushwick, with the ‘topping out’ of the first homes now complete. Located off Claphill Lane, just two miles from Worcester and less than four miles from the picturesque Malvern Hills, the new development – named The Green – will include a range of two, three, four and five bedroom homes, aimed at people on all stages of the property ladder. In addition to the new homes, Lioncourt Homes is also delivering a well-equipped play area and improving existing pedestrian links throughout the development. Creating a sustainable place to live, Lioncourt Homes will be maintaining and enhancing the existing grassland at The Green, helping to improve biodiversity, as well as planting additional trees in the open, green space. 🌳🌳 CONGRATULATIONS - City of Launceston Urban Greening Strategy awarded The Planning Institute of Australia announced the Tasmanian award winners for planning excellence in December. And the City of Launceston was recognised as the Planning Research Award Winner. The City of Launceston’s Urban Greening Strategy tackles climate change with knowledge and innovation and a focus on the heightened susceptibility to heat within the Tasmanian community. The project aims to mitigate and adapt, reduce the urban heat island effect, transition to a water-sensitive city, and design sustainable communities and ecosystems, as well as remaining sensitive to heritage values. The strategy emphasizes heat equity and the benefits of urban trees, using remote sensing for regional greening. The project is innovative, collaborative, resourceful, and adaptable to other urban areas, with the first trees being planted in heat-prone neighbourhoods within Launceston City. Depave, a nonprofit organization based in Portland, Oregon, is dedicated to transforming urban landscapes by removing unnecessary concrete and asphalt, replacing them with green spaces. Since its inception in 2008, Depave has removed over 150,000 square feet of pavement across more than 70 sites, including schools, churches, and parking lots. This initiative not only enhances urban aesthetics but also addresses environmental concerns such as stormwater runoff and the urban heat island effect. By creating permeable surfaces, Depave allows rainwater to be absorbed naturally, reducing pollution and mitigating flooding risks. Their projects have diverted approximately 24.5 million gallons of rainwater from storm drains annually and have led to the planting of over 1,600 trees, shrubs, and other native plants in 2023 alone. Depave's efforts have inspired similar movements globally, contributing to a broader trend of urban depaving aimed at creating healthier, more sustainable cities. (Info by Planet Warriors)
