With so much suburban development, we’re seeing more and more urban flooding. These additional roads, driveways and pavements significantly increase the speed of surface runoff when it rains and the drains fill really quickly instead of infiltrating the soil. Trees protect soil from erosion and reduce the sediment run-off, which helps the passage of water into river channels rather than overfilling the drains. Just look at the recent floods in Dubai - over a year's worth of rain in a single day, causing over $1bn in damages.
