#beingcategorical about decision making. While working in a large multinational, whose Indian entity had just started taking shape, we were visited by a foreign counterpart. Around the conference table, the discussion was about homogenisation of packaging across global platform. The gentleman had come with the product packaging from his country. When the Indian packaging was compared, the colour difference was noticed. The foreign counterpart was quick to provide the pantone shade card index for the colours on the packaging. Lesson 1: when you want to make a point, keep facts ready. Lesson 2: when people ask you to prove a point, keep documentation ready. Since we had the specific pantone shade number to refer to, we dialled up the printer to come pronto. It was now the turn of foreign counterpart to be amazed. He was amazed at the quick response from the printer and the nimbleness of Indian business mindset to respond to a client's request. The printer turned up in quick time while we had taken a short break for the Indian Masala chai. Another delicacy and knowledge for foreign counterpart, about the diversity in tea drinking styles of India. Back in the conference table, the printer was ready with his laptop and the artwork. When we reassembled, he had worked out the new version as per the provided shade card. This was an awakening moment for the foreign counterpart. "Is this how you guys work in India?" We were stumped at the question. Each person had a calamity angle. When asked what he meant by his statement, his reply: "I am amazed your vendor offers such quick alternatives, that to you in your office, on the go. Won't you wait for the HQ to raise a mail for design rethink, let three people approve the mail, a quotation be called for from the agency, the SAP raise a ticket and then the vendor starts the process (a good 7-15 days process)?" When we smiled at this and said we can print the changes and show the proof in 10 days, he wanted to know if entire India runs this way. #MSMEs vendors form the backbone of our country.
