The Research Institute joins the nation in celebrating Black History Month! Heritage months are a time when we as a team renew our commitment to year-round equity research that helps ensure educational access and positive outcomes for all students. The postsecondary attainment rate of the Black population in Dallas County has increased at every degree level, every year since 2014 (through most recent PUMS data), with nearly a 6-percentage-point increase from 2014 to 2021. Higher attainment means higher wages, so the Research Institute continues to examine the unique factors that can maximize intra-group attainment rates--and therefore opportunity and mobility--for our Black community members.

Black History Month is a crucial time of the year for Black Americans. It is a time where we can finally see ourselves reflected in everyday life, celebrate, and come together as one. Unfortunately, it is often reduced to merely posting Black icons in HR or writing it on a calendar. It is important to understand that authentic celebration is not just limited to the month of February, but it is a 12-month thing in black homes. During Black History Month, it is a great opportunity to dive deep into black history, how it was created, and how it has impacted society today. It is a time to re-learn or learn new information about the contributions and sacrifices of Black Americans in shaping the country - and the WORLD. It is also a time to pause, thank our ancestors, and acknowledge their sacrifices and strength. Celebrating Black History Month authentically goes beyond performing surface-level gestures. It involves actively finding ways to show up for the Black community and amplify Black voices. It is an opportunity to continue the work of creating a more equitable and just society. Let us take this time to celebrate and honor the rich history and contributions of Black Americans, not just in February but throughout the year. #happyblackhistorymonth #blackhistorymatters #diversityandinclusion #amplifyblackvoices

As we kick off Black History Month, we're reminded of the invaluable contributions, resilience, and cultural richness of the African American community. This month isn't just about looking back; it's about recognizing the journey, the struggles, and the ongoing pursuit of justice and equity. Although it is a time to celebrate, it is also crucial to acknowledge the disparities that persist in homeownership for Black Americans. Despite progress, Black homeownership rates in America still lag behind other groups, a reflection of historic injustices and discriminatory practices. Let's continue to advocate for fair housing policies, support initiatives that promote economic empowerment, and work towards a future where everyone has equal opportunities to achieve homeownership and financial security. Join us in honoring the past, celebrating the present, and shaping a more inclusive and equitable future for all. Together, we can make history. https://lnkd.in/gNB2aJ4G

Black History Month serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience, strength, and undeniable impact of the Black community in our culture and in our workforce. I am proud to be part of an organization that is committed to fostering an environment where every individual, regardless of race or background, has the opportunity to thrive and succeed. We recognize that diversity is not just a buzzword—it is the cornerstone of innovation and progress. This week, I joined my colleagues from our ERG, BOLD, for a panel discussion around personal experiences of being Black in the workplace and ways to be an effective advocate. The powerful stories I heard emphasized the need for constructive conversations around the specific challenges facing Black individuals in the corporate environment. These conversations are not always easy, but they can have a great impact. By openly addressing systemic barriers and biases, we can actively work towards building environments where everyone feels valued and empowered to succeed. Let’s use this month as a catalyst for meaningful dialogue, action, and allyship. Together, we can build a more inclusive and equitable future for all.
We join our ERG, BOLD, the Black and African American Network, in celebrating Black History Month. BOLD members reflect on their heritage and encourage us all to listen, learn and celebrate the pivotal achievements of Blacks and African Americans and focus on the progress of tomorrow. #blackhistorymonth
