Hit me with your theories, evidence or provocations! I'm being interviewed for the Diversity in Research podcast on Wednesday and I particularly want to talk about 2 things 1. Why is the research-adjacent world female dominated? 2. How can research adjacent folks use their position to positively influence diversity and inclusion? I have thoughts but I'd love to feel like I'm representing our community not just my own waffle! What do you think?

  • Why is the research adjacent world so female- dominated?

May be a bit late for your podcast, but in my experience a large proportion of my fellow research-adjacent colleagues moved into these roles after securing either their MSc or PhD, or after their first/second postdoc position - I've heard some female colleagues say it was because of the instability of researcher positions not aligning with their plans for having a family. I feel there is something more going on here though 🤔

Research Adjacent I would agree with Jaydene Witchell and it is truly the story I have heard over and over again. I would say another reason that I have heard is that academia is sometimes very pushy and requires you to believe that your are the top Expert in your field which is contrary to what many females are socialised to.
