Paris Olympics has come to a close and there were several inspiring moments, including the fact that this was the first Olympics to achieve gender equality. However one visual that will be etched in my mind forever is where the two women, one of them the most decorated gymnast of our times, bowing down to the gold medal winner. Why is this visual so powerful? In a world where opportunities for women, especially women of color, are not equal, we have to navigate not only societal barriers but also women who do not support other women. There’s been research and findings on the queen bee syndrome and the reality is that with scarcity of opportunities, there’s invariably competition. This picture speaks a thousand words of not diminishing one’s achievements while celebrating another’s. I wish and hope that until we achieve gender equality, even when opportunities are scarce, we have the power and courage to celebrate every woman who breaks the barrier to create a more equal world. What’s your experience of women supporting and celebrating women? #leadership #genderequality

Great post, Reshma. I’m always baffled by this. There are many who talk and write about women supporting women and are the first to praise such initiatives or memes, yet their actions reveal a very different and ugly stance. I’ve found that even when one opens one's 'virtual arms' to include others in the work you are doing, competition (in their eyes), unkind words, and a negative aura are rampant and prevalent, sometimes even leading to copying and plagiarism of ideas and work. It’s a sad state of affairs. I’m not sure why, but it is alive and well! I'm glad to say that you are far from that—always supportive, always true to your words and actions, and I'm happy to equally support you as well as others who I hold dear! #BeLikeSimone

Reshma Ramachandran you hit it so nicelly woman and men need to learn "not diminishing one’s achievements while celebrating another’s.", this is best in class performance and collaboration... Was so nice to see Rebeca and Simone talking in between their performances and smiling and supporting each other... We compete in the game and support each other all around...

As they say - "lighting up someone's candle won't make yours shine less bright". Beautiful example of sportsmanship and women's support.

Maintaining a mindset of abundance versus scarcity is so key in celebrating and supporting others. Even if you are competing for the same thing, holding onto the fact that the world is big enough for all of us and “if not this, something better” allows me to celebrate and support others… on the playing field and in the Boardroom.
