Two days after my second daughter was born, in August 2011, the U.S. Breastfeeding Committee (USBC) officially declared August to be National Breastfeeding Month (NBF) at an event hosted by Howard University Hospital and the DC Breastfeeding Coalition. This year, the 2024 NBM theme is Nourish, Sustain, Thrive, selected, according to the USBC, to “shine a light on why protecting, promoting, and supporting lactation is so important for the human life cycle, honor the incredible work that organizations are doing to make the world a little more friendly for new parents and families and highlight how individuals, funders, and policymakers can contribute to a strong and sustainable lactation field.” Organizations, funders, and policymakers, what have you done for NBF month? In honor of #WorldBreastfeedingWeek, we're giving you an exclusive preview of evaluation findings for NACCHO's Continuity of Care in Breastfeeding Support Blueprint program. In 2023, we conducted a mixed methods #Evaluation with seven local-level organizations that were funded to strengthen community lactation support using the Blueprint. Key findings included: ✅ The Blueprint helps to build a culture of breastfeeding by offering strategies that address each level of the socio-ecological model. ✅ The Blueprint can be feasibly implemented by offering a comprehensive set of strategies with the flexibility to prioritize the strategies that build on work already being done. ✅ Participating in the program helped to create a foundation of work that led to additional funding. ✅ Funded organizations were able to unify partners and improve access for lactation support within their communities. National Breastfeeding Month, observed every August in the United States, is a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and supporting breastfeeding mothers. The month focuses on educating the public about the health benefits of breastfeeding for both babies and mothers, promoting breastfeeding-friendly policies, and encouraging communities to provide resources and support for breastfeeding families. #NationalBreastfeedingMonth #BreastfeedingAwareness #BreastfeedingSupport 

Black women in nine US states have breastfeeding initiation rates on par with or better than their white counterparts. In fact, Black women in Vermont have the highest breastfeeding initiation rate in the country! Congrats to Vermont for supporting all parents who wish to breastfeed! Black breastfeeding initiation is higher in Idaho, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. In Oregon, Black and white initiation rates are exactly equal. In Alaska, Hawaii, and Washington, Black and white breastfeeding initiation rates are nearly equal, with white rates being only fractionally higher. This data comes from the CDC (Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Breastfeeding Initiation ─ United States, 2019). U.S. Breastfeeding Committee is hosting the "Policy Priority Survey: Help Us Understand the Most Pressing Needs of Breastfeeding Families." The policies that surround and shape our lives are creating barriers that make it difficult or impossible to maintain breastfeeding, but together we can help shift the landscape. Individuals are invited to take the survey and share their perspectives on the breastfeeding policy issues that most urgently need to be addressed in the upcoming Congressional session. 10 steps to successful breastfeeding as recommended by the World Health Organization 1. Have a written breastfeeding policy that is routinely communicated to all healthcare staff. 2. Train all healthcare staff in the skills necessary to implement this policy. 3. Inform all pregnant women about the benefits and management of breastfeeding. 4. Help mothers initiate breastfeeding within half an hour of birth. 5. Show mothers how to breastfeed and how to maintain lactation, even if they should be separated from their infants. 6. Give newborn infants no food or drink other than breast milk, unless medically indicated. 7. Practice rooming-in - that is, allow mothers and infants to remain together 24 hours a day. 8. Encourage breastfeeding on demand. 9. Give no artificial teats or pacifiers (also called dummies or soothers) to breastfeeding infants. 10. Foster the establishment of breastfeeding support groups and refer mothers to them on discharge from the hospital or clinic. These steps are designed by World Health Organization to support and promote breastfeeding, ensuring that both mothers and babies receive the best possible start.
