Beef is probably most people’s favorite protein, but did you know that if its environmental cost was factored into the price, it would be the most expensive protein in the world? See the calculation below. Its true cost is more than 5 times the current cost! At the other end of the spectrum is chicken, whose true cost is very close to the current cost. Scientists say the reason for beef’s hefty environmental price tag is due to a combination of factors including the need for a lot of land to raise cattle and the high emissions arising from the burps of the livestock itself. So maybe it’s time for us to reconsider our favorite protein?
