Focused on AI in education. Teacher, speaker, OER textbook author, consultant. Educators can be critical, curious, playful, and pragmatic as we move forward together on AI.
8 of my students chose to reflect on AI feedback for extra credit (in addition to peer review and a required tutor visit) through http://MyEssayFeedback.ai. The main reactions? *Surprise at how accurate, specific, and useful the feedback was. *Desire to use AI for feedback again. Other observations: Most asked for feedback on clarity or organization rather than for encouragement. A couple reported being unnerved at how fast the AI feedback showed up. One had an "aha" moment. Another said they now had many more ideas for what to add to the essay. One was glad to find that the AI made the same suggestion as the tutor. I'm a volunteer advisor on this teacher-created app, and I'm feeling like we're on the right track with our approach! Grateful to Eric Kean for developing MyEssayFeedback and to all the teachers who have tested it and helped shape it, including Marc Watkins Liza Long, Ed.D. Aimee Firmani, and Cathleen Peters. It's been great to get ed tech advice from the likes of Jeremy Dean, PhD, Nate Angell, and Debbie Abilock. And we appreciated the initial free access to GPT-4 that OpenAI granted. “Let us find a vision for our company” (no AI was used in creating this message) I heard this many times during my career, but: What does it mean? What is the purpose of it? What ‘problem’ does it solve? Probably it will involve throwing a lot of money away, calling in the ‘experts'. Endless meetings and committees, hours wasted on some polished phrases - a few words. Maybe even a new corporate colour, whoopee. And the ‘problem’ which needed solving was? You tell me. Here at Psiverse we do not have the time, the money, the need for it - it really is very simple. Our common bond was clear from the start. They are the values which tie us together as a group of people having joined to lead Psiverse: Passion: Without it we might as well roll over in bed every morning and not bother. It is a fire that burns inside us to continue to deliver and to exceed expectations. Expertise: This is when decades of experience make a massive difference.
