The Framework for Equitable Opportunities to Learn in STEM, released by Institute of Education Sciences Regional Educational Laboratory Program, offers a guide to many characteristics and entry points into creating equitable opportunities to learn in STEM. I have worked at Virginia Tech for almost 8 years, and have worked with President Sands for all those years. He has now been at Virginia Tech for 10 years! One of the challenging dynamics in higher education is the increasingly short-tenure of college presidents. Short tenures impact hiring and retaining senior leaders; they impact visioning and executing on a vision for an institution; they impact community and governing board relationships; and they impacts culture and climate of an institution. Virginia Tech is by no means perfect, but it does have many amazing and good and wonderful aspects: steady leadership; very cool people to work with; a beautiful campus; a motto of Ut Prosim (that I may serve), which is a lived motto that everyone who is a Hokie knows; a commitment to inclusion and diversity through InclusiveVT; and a community ethos where you have the opportunity to actualize your potential. I think it is important to remind ourselves why we stay in our jobs; what is important to us; and if we can be "decently content." https://lnkd.in/eb6s_69W

Calling all Educators! Albertus Magnus College is holding a virtual information session on July 10 for those interested in our Master's of Science in STEM Education Program. I cannot stress enough that STEM is more than the acronym. It is GOOD teaching-- a pedagogical tool that provides access, inclusion, and equity through experiential, trans-disciplinary learning. STEM can and should be integrated into all classrooms, and it is easier to do than some of us think! Our program is geared toward just that. In 11 months, you will earn 30 credits, learn practical ways to incorporate STEM across subject areas, learn grant-writing and leadership skills, and if you so choose, become prepared to pass the Praxis II in Technology Education for the 047 cross-endorsement. 🎓 Leading Toward Impact: Diversity and Leadership in Higher Education 🌟 For decades, colleges and universities have grappled with racial injustice and diversity challenges. Since 1992, The Leadership Alliance, founded by Brown University, has been a beacon of hope. This consortium of 41 institutions is dedicated to increasing the participation of underrepresented students in Ph.D. and M.D.-Ph.D. programs. With over 6,000 undergraduates mentored and more than 1,000 doctoral scholars produced, The Leadership Alliance Consortium exemplifies the power of diversity in academia. Despite legal challenges, such as recent rulings on college admissions, the Alliance continues to pave the way for a diverse research workforce and academic community. The recent Presidential Forum in D.C. celebrated the Alliance's 30th anniversary, highlighting the crucial need for diversity in higher education. The Urban Leaders Fellowship has kicked off its 2024 summer fellowship in seven regions this summer led by more than 14 incredible Regional and Policy Directors! #WeveStarted This summer marks an especially important juncture of our 14th year - the relaunching of both the Oakland and Indianapolis regions alongside launching ULF's first ever Inaugural Mentor Program. #Year14 ULF Oakland is led by Georgia Savage with Appointed/Elected Official Meredith Curry Nuñez. Oakland has a long-standing history of impactful local policy and impact with more than 50+ alumni going on to led policy and advocacy spaces, serve as Chief of Staff, and Executive Director of local and state organizations. Notable alumni include Kyra Mungia, Forbes 30 Under 30, and Townes Bouchard-Dean of Oakland Thrive. We are excited for Oakland to dig deep in higher education policy - an unchartered arena for ULF. #TeamOakland ULF Indy is led by Danielle Drake, a committed community advocate with Appointed/Elected Official, Karrah Herring, CEIO. Since 2016, ULF Indy has been a critical career intersection for not only K-12 educators, but start-up founders, and civic leaders across the country. STEM involves thinking critically, logically, and analytically. It also requires approaching problems persistently and creatively. ⠀ Thus, STEM subjects and activities can teach girls how to think like a scientist. As a result, they are more likely to become better at problem-solving professionals. ⠀ Vote for STEM, support STEM and grow with STEM!
