South Africa's “Mother City” Ranked Second in Time Out's Top 50 Cities Cape Town has just had its busiest tourism season ever, with more people arriving at its international airport than ever before in a single month. In December 2023, our beloved Mother City welcomed over 317,000 international passengers! This is a new record which beats the previous high of 290,000 in January 2020 and once again shows that our city’s charm is spreading far and wide. If that’s not enough, Cape Town has just been voted the second-best city in the world to live in by Time Out for 2024 – coming in right after New York City. That means international travellers prefer us over other popular destinations like Madrid, Berlin, and even London. And let’s not forget that the cost of living in Cape Town is about 65-70% cheaper than in London and 62% cheaper than in New York! Time Out’s survey, carried out in collaboration with research company Potentia Insight, investigated the viewpoints of locals and examined elements such as the quality and affordability of food, culture, and nightlife. “We also asked locals how their city makes them feel: are they happy there? Is it a beautiful place? Is it easy to make social connections? Their thousands of responses gave us a unique insight into the reality of living in the world’s greatest cities right now,” said Grace Beard, Travel Editor for Time Out. They also considered the opinions of over 100 Time Out staff writers and editors, who are seasoned travellers from all corners of the globe. Cape Town, and South Africa overall, is just all kinds of incredible and besides being a great place to live in, it also offers so many great business opportunities. According to the CCID, Cape Town business owners and investors are very pleased with the city's thriving economic environment and its promising opportunities for growth. https://lnkd.in/dQ29QMAs #SouthAfrica #capetown #BestCity Tyrone Askew

"Foot traffic from visitors traveling over 350 miles to downtown Tampa rose almost 36% compared to 2019, according to the Placer.ai report. The largest such increase was in April 2023, which saw a bump of 80.5%." Compared to 2022, 2023 was a mixed bag for Tampa tourism, but compared to 2019 its growth is off the charts. Henry Queen features Placer.ai's "Tampa Tourism Trends" report in this recent Tampa Bay Business Journal article. Here's what to know: https://lnkd.in/drucsHeT #foottraffic #foottrafficanalytics

Senior Research Partnership Manager at Outdooractive | Promoting sustainable tourism in a stunning world
“France is the world’s biggest tourist destination, but we have a serious lack of data to help manage the crowds,” the government said. Great overview of visitor management measures implemented across #France, #Netherlands, #Spain, #Italy, and #Greece compiled by John Henley. Three key takeaways from the article: 1. There is no one solution that fits all destinations and contexts when it comes to tackling overcrowding and (temporary) tourism hotspots. 2. Promising approaches to managing crowds and distributing visitors do exist. 3. The piloted solutions can only work if there are visitor monitoring processes in place that are based on reliable data sources. Integrating multiple data sources, making movement data openly available, and having a functioning digital monitoring system in place are crucial steps towards responsible visitor management. Outdooractive is on the forefront of making this a reality for outdoor and adventure travel destinations, but we need to keep innovating to make this scalable and a standard for destinations worldwide. BTW, our AIR project explores possibilities of smart, ai-based recommenders as nudging tools for effective visitor management. Cities around the world are facing unprecedented challenges in managing the surge of tourists descending upon their streets. While it's no secret that #tourism is vital for economic growth, the influx of visitors has put a strain on infrastructure, resources, and the overall quality of life for residents. It is crucial for cities to adapt to this new reality and find innovative solutions to manage over tourism. Charging visitors may seem like a straightforward way to deal with the issue, but is it really the only way? I believe that cities can take a more holistic approach to managing over tourism by implementing a combination of strategies. This can include promoting sustainable tourism practices, investing in infrastructure to accommodate crowds, and working with local communities to ensure their needs are met. Charging visitors may help alleviate some of the strain on cities, but it is essential to consider the impact it may have on accessibility and equity. #architecture #urbandesign #urbanism #placemaking #cities https://lnkd.in/ekPB5giv
