European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS) 2024: Pathways to Innovation Excellence The European Commission has recently published the European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS), the annual report on the state of research and innovation in the European Union and individual Member States. The report also provides a comparison with neighboring European countries and some non-EU countries. Among the key factors of success for the most innovative countries is an ecosystem with significant investments in innovation and research in the private sector, strong cooperation between companies, high internationalization capacity, strong ability to patent, and a high level of tertiary education. These factors are closely linked to the entrepreneurial capacity of these countries as well as the ability of entrepreneurship to drive and attract a skilled workforce. From a public perspective, the keys to success for these countries are the ability to provide government support for R&D and innovation more generally. ⭐🇪🇺 Learn more about the 2025 EIC Challenges! These calls are created each year by the EIC to stimulate innovation in particular areas to address key EU objectives. The Challenge Calls give a strong indication of the European Commission's priorities and provide applicants with a great opportunity to get funded under the EIC programme. In past years, success rates in Challenge calls have been close to double that of the EIC open calls. For example, in 2023, the Pathfinder Challenges had a 11.7% success rate, while the Open (March round) success rate was 6.7%.
