Mozambique taking major step towards National Program for CBNRM Mozambique's policies acknowledge the vital role local #communities play in managing #naturalresources. However, challenges in ensuring the effectiveness of these policies have led to #biodiversity loss, weak #benefitsharing, jeopardizing the potential of the country's natural capital as a driver for economic growth and development. In response, the Government of Mozambique has embarked on the development of the Mozambique National Program for Community-Based Natural Resources Management (#CBNRM). From August 20th to 22nd, with support from United Nations/DESA, the government of Mozambique, driven by a collaborative effort from various sectors (rural development, forest, conservation, mining, fisheries) organized an event to build consensus on the key elements for the CBNRM Program, under the context that communities engagement is critical across all these productive sectors. ReGeCom is proud to facilitate the development of this crucial guiding instrument, aligned with our mission to establish national standards that uphold community rights and their active involvement in conservation. As part of the event, participants visited the Matchia Community, a ReGeCom-supported initiative, where community members shared their experiences on how #communitygovernance is strengthening their relationship with Maputo National Park. Why is a National Program for CBNRM Essential? Mozambique requires a strong and intentional commitment from the government, to lead the efforts of placing local communities at the center of conservation and development agendas. Establishing standardized and harmonized approaches to community-based natural resource management will enable effective monitoring of its impacts on #livelihoods, foster learning, and influence impactful policies. We invite you to join us in this critical movement to ensure that Mozambique takes this significant leap for the benefit of both its #peopleandnature. More about this and other ReGeCom’s efforts on #community-led conservation will be shared throughout the various events at #ClimateweekNYC. Stay tuned!
