Coulson Aviation, a world leader in aerial firefighting, has received Transport Canada - Transports Canada Approved Training Organization (ATO) approval, making it the first aviation company approved to provide training in aircraft structures and one of 20 ATOs across Canada. Coulson’s ATO allows the company to train students toward their Aircraft Maintenance Engineer – Structures (AME-S) license at no cost to the student. Coulson hires team members who demonstrate a passion for the aviation industry and positive attitudes to join its workforce. Once students have demonstrated excellent potential in the industry, students are invited to join the ATO program. There is no required tuition to attend the course. The student remains on the Coulson payroll while attending school and can further supplement their income by working for the company outside of schooling hours. Coulson guarantees a full-time position to every student who completes the school portion, offering a path through apprenticeship to a full AME-S license. “This approval is a huge milestone and tremendously valuable to Coulson, allowing us to hire, train, and educate hand-selected team members,” says Coulson Aviation President and COO Britton Coulson. “By going through their schooling and apprenticeship here at Coulson, working alongside licensed team members on actual aircraft and projects, they become much more well-rounded technicians. Meet The Team- Chris Leitch. Job title Check Supervisor. – Leading a team of engineers and mechanics in a heavy maintenance aircraft bay to ensure the team works effectively and all work is carried out in accordance with all maintenance data and company procedures. Signing the certificate of release to service for the aircraft at the end of the maintenance check, Responsible for all personnel working in the maintenance bay. Career path 12 years. Starting as an apprentice for 4 years, moving onto Mech grade 1 and then lead mechanic. After achieving my B1 licence I progressed to Engineer, gaining my company approval in 2018. After over 5 years as B1 engineer I applied and was successful for the role of check supervisor in April 2024. Why aviation as a career. How did you get in? Growing up I was always fascinated by aircraft and aviation in general. Plane spotting as a kid, a career in aviation was always something I looked towards. When I left school in 2011, I went onto Ayrshire college where I completed an NC in Aeronautical Engineering. Completing this I had applied to various positions one of which was the apprenticeship program here at PAML. Qualifications I started at PAML with my N.C. in aero engineering. Since then, I have gained my B1.1 + C aircraft maintenance engineer license, I have completed type rating courses on Boeing 737NG + 737 MAX. I have gained a qualification in borescope inspecting. I have also gained in house approvals for Tug driving, aircraft engine ground run, aircraft taxi and aircraft high power engine run. Career highlights During my apprenticeship I won the Scottish institute for enterprise Young Innovators challenge, this involved me designing an app that would help promote economical & safe driving. My biggest working achievement is gaining my B1 licence after many years of study and sacrifice. In January 2024 I had the opportunity to go to the Boeing factory over in Seattle, USA for 2 weeks to represent the company as part of an inspection team. I have also been invited to attend an engineering recruitment event that is being hosted in Dubai. PAML as an employer of choice PAML isn’t your normal 9-5 mundane job. From the start as an 18-year-old apprentice carrying out routine maintenance tasks and being involved with engine runs was exciting. As an apprentice I also had the opportunity for work trips away to Dublin and Bremen. I also find that working in a dynamic environment which is expanding keeps me engaged. Future plans. Currently my plans are to settle into my new role as check supervisor and focus on developing my management techniques. I also hope to gain my company approval to perform the maintenance check flight. During my stay at LTP, I had the privilege of working in a highly professional environment, gaining valuable knowledge, skills, and insights into what it feels like to be part of a world-class aviation team. This OJT not only provided me with life-changing lessons but also allowed me to grow professionally, giving me new perspectives on the aviation industry. In this narrative, I will highlight some memorable moments during my time at LTP and share the lessons I learned from my mentors, supervisors, and managers. From the first week of my OJT, LTP employees gave us a comprehensive overview of the company's strict compliance with environmental awareness, policies, security, and safety protocols. The maintenance planners, heads, and managers also welcomed me warmly, exposing me to their field of expertise and providing valuable insights into working with a dynamic team. One of the standout aspects of my experience was the hands-on approach taken by LTP employees in sharing their knowledge. From my first field exposure to my last day, I consistently learned new things. The Maintenance Planning Heads and Managers were committed to making sure we gained new learnings day by day, helping us understand every aspect of maintenance planning. They also presented new challenges that improved my leadership and teaching skills. I was given the responsibility of guiding new OJT batches and sharing what I had learned throughout my time in maintenance planning. This opportunity not only expanded my knowledge but also strengthened my expertise in the field. During my time at LTP, I learned the importance of communication, discipline, and hard work in maintenance planning. Planning isn’t just about scheduling tasks it’s also about how well those tasks are executed. The planners taught me that every detail matters and that maintaining open communication is essential for the success of aircraft maintenance procedures. Their guidance showed me that being thorough and diligent in the planning process is crucial for ensuring the safety and reliability of aircraft operations. To sum up, my OJT at Lufthansa Technik Philippines and with the MA43 Team has been a rewarding and transformative experience. Working alongside experienced planners and mentors deepened my understanding of the aviation industry and instilled in me the values of discipline, teamwork, and continuous learning. This experience solidified my passion for aviation and equipped me with the tools I need for a successful career. I am truly grateful for the opportunity, and I’m confident that the lessons and skills I’ve gained at LTP will serve as a strong foundation for my future professional endeavors.

Last week, Air Canada announced new scholarships aimed at supporting aspiring Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs) at 7 technical colleges across the country. Through partnerships with British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), ÉNA | École nationale d'aérotechnique, Centennial College, Fanshawe College, Canadore College, Mohawk College, and Northern Lights College, Air Canada will be offering scholarships of $1,500 to one student from each institution. These scholarships will help alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with pursuing education in aircraft maintenance. What makes this initiative even more impactful is that it goes beyond just providing financial aid. Scholarship recipients will also have the opportunity for a work placement at Air Canada Maintenance, allowing them to gain valuable hands-on experience in a professional setting. It is very disheartening as well as unbelievable how all these aviation companies in these big countries want qualified personnel to come to work for them when their aren't much of any to work with. Who were there have moved on and you can't develop skill technicians out of thin air. An aircraft technician takes pride in his skills which has been developed over years of wanting to do what has to be done get you safely to where you are going. It takes 18 months of schooling just to get them to a green level. Each individual still have to gain knowledge of each type of Aircraft, which also will take time. The only how these young people can be better at what they have done the ground work before entering any sort of classroom. Which would mean they can transition into the role evolving as they work along side senior staff. This job isn't meant for everyone. Is it that difficult for a technician to get sponsorship from a company like any pilot can? Because the last time I checked the airplanes still need to be maintained just like they need someone to fly them. Respect for the position as an Aircraft Technician must be shown as they are the ones keep you flying all over the world under the safest of conditions.
