In honor of Disability Pride Month, we're celebrating inspiring stories from our Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) division. Every year in July, Disability Pride Month recognizes individuals with disabilities, celebrating their identities, culture, and positive contributions to society. Bill Carpenter spent most of his life battling depression, anxiety, and a pervasive sense of not fitting in. He desperately needed a creative outlet and a place to escape. In January 2020, his caseworker suggested he try RHD’s Outside the Lines Studio, and Bill embraced the opportunity. National Disability Independence Day, celebrated on July 26th, marks the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on this day in 1990. The ADA is a crucial law that prevents discrimination against people with disabilities in various areas, including jobs, transportation, public places, businesses, communication, and government services. Thanks to the ADA, many common barriers have been removed. For example, narrow doorways and small bathroom stalls are now designed to accommodate wheelchairs. The world wasn’t built with people with disabilities in mind, and because of that, the world we live in is inherently ableist. Ableism is the discrimination against people with disabilities based on the belief that typical abilities are superior. One way to take an active part in normalizing disabilities is committing to being a disability ally and learning to recognize ableism when you see it and how to take actions to call it out. Thank you Peter Torres Fremlin of Disability Debrief for being one of the first in the global disability community to publicly share what has been happening at the International Disability Alliance . This opening is so needed. Yes, we need to talk! In addition to the questions you raised, I have more: - How can IDA be rebuilt so that non-elite persons with disabilities have not only a voice, but a leadership role? It is telling that the new Board is run mainly by men from powerful positions and the only woman is "secretary". - How can other OPDs and OPD networks on the ground in the Global South gain working relationships with large donors and also, partner with them to run key spaces like the Global Disability Summit or Global Action on Disability Network (GLAD)? This would provide innovations informed by local actors (the majority of people with disabilities) and prevent a monopolization of all spaces. - How do we truly live the principles of "nothing about us without us" and the participation mandate of the CRPD? Maybe work of the participatory philanthropy community (which was inspired by the motto of the disability movement) should be tapped. In the New Disability Action Plan, the UK Government has set out 32 practical actions to make the UK the most accessible place in the world. The plan consulted over 1,300 people with a disability, their families and other interested parties with the aim to transform the lives of millions across the UK. The plan includes a new funding to support people with disabilities looking to be elected to public office, guidance for local authorities on creating accessible playgrounds, a group to help educate businesses on the legal rights of assistance dog owners, and more.
