The Montana Mine Design, Operations and Closure Conference last week marked the first official event with Enviromin as part of RESPEC! Teams from our Montana offices participated as sponsors, demonstrating our commitment to environmental stewardship in mining operations. A special shoutout to Senior Environmental Scientist Katharine Seipel, who delivered an outstanding presentation on "Advances and Opportunities in Microbial Ecology of Mined Environments.” Her talk featured compelling case studies showcasing Enviromin's innovative work in achieving denitrification and sulfate reduction for our mining clients, making a lasting impact.

On 25 March at 18:30 GMT, the Institute of Directors (IoD) will launch its new Natural Resources special interest group at the House of Lords, London. Business leaders, government ministers, ambassadors, high commissioners, representatives of diplomatic missions to the UK, and members of the House of Lords will be in invite-only attendance. The event will encourage responsible harnessing of natural resources for the global energy transition and witness the first-ever signing of The Responsible Natural Resources Declaration by the attendees. The event will include speeches from the Rt. Hon. Baroness Lindsay Northover, Vice Chair of the APPG on Critical Minerals, Nusrat Ghani MP, Minister of State for the Department of Business and Trade and the Investment Security Unit, and a pioneer for critical minerals policy for the UK. The industry keynotes will feature Simon Moores, CEO of Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, and Richard Taylor, Chair of the IOD Natural Resources Special Interest Group (SIG). The Institute of Directors (IoD), the UK's leading body for professional directors, formed in 1903 and was granted a Royal Charter in 1906. Their Natural Resources SIG is a platform designed to facilitate communications between industry leaders, government officials, and peers in the natural resources sector. It aims to enable the sharing of best practices and to engage in constructive discussions about critical issues affecting the industry. By working together, the participants can take action to advance the energy transition. This sector encompasses several crucial areas such as commodity metals, critical minerals, processing and mining, energy, water, fisheries, and agriculture. These areas are essential to the UK's economy and the global sustainable future. Commenting on the launch, the IOD's Natural Resources leadership team, Richard Taylor, Juan Cabrera, and Kruthika A. Bala stated: "We are delighted to launch the Natural Resources SIG, which will provide a valuable platform for individuals and organisations working in this vital sector. By bringing together diverse perspectives, we can foster collaboration, share knowledge, and contribute to a more sustainable and prosperous future for the UK's natural resources industry. “We are delighted to host this launch reception with Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, signifying our commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration within the vital natural resources sector. " The Natural Resources SIG welcomes all IoD members, non-members, and individuals working in the natural resources sector. To learn more about the group please visit: https://lnkd.in/eGi3e_h4

A life long learner and advocate of Mutual Benefit within the economics of the resource sector for all stakeholders.
CPPA is really leading the way in defining what is a ‘Mine Closure’ practitioner, however, I think that this title may be limiting in who identifies with the knowledge available through and needed in the process. Think we are only ever going to see study at a Post Graduate level (possibly rightly so) given the need for a existing knowledge base but do we see a need for early career and pre-graduate knowledge pathways? Again, the right people/organisations leading the knowledge creation will greatly increase industry getting it right and allow for better legislation to support good practice.

One week to go to register for this online talk where I will be discussing regulatory and management for pit lake closure planning. This paper title and content will be broadly following the 2022 paper I co-authored with colleagues Jerry Vandenberg, Dr. Martin Schultze and Devin Castendyk, PhD, PG Vandenberg, J.; Schultze, M.; McCullough, C. D. & Castendyk, D. (2022). The future direction of pit lakes: part 2, corporate and regulatory needs to improve management. Mine Water and the Environment. 41: 544–556.

Interesting and complex issue Cherie D. McCullough, in my experience I reviewed some cases in Peru and Bolivia, the pit lake is an option for #mineclosure and this requires a depth knowledge of groundwater quality/quantity and the cost of management could be very expensive #mining #watermanagement

If the company behind an enormous proposed new opencast gold in central Otago wants there to be ‘no net loss’ to the environment, they need to avoid the Fast-track Approvals Bill. This new bill proposed by the coalition Government allows companies to avoid existing environmental regulations, robust scientific evidence, and community input. Instead, this anti-democratic law overrides environmental bottom lines to allow development, no matter how environmentally damaging it is. The dry landscapes of Central Otago may look barren, but these rock tors are full of rare plants, and lots of lizards and invertebrates. The site Santana Minerals wants to mine is under a post-Tenure Review conservation covenant to protect landscape, biodiversity & historic values. The company’s drilling is already adversely affecting landscape values, and full-scale mining would also involve a massive tailings dam, with the risk of arsenic contamination to waterways. If companies can override environmental protections through the Fast-track Approvals Bill, we’ll see worse outcomes for nature. Let’s bin the bill, protect the quirky little plants that live among the rock tors, and bring back a flourishing natural environment to Aotearoa New Zealand. If you'd like to find out more about how you can fight the #WarOnNature, come along to a special webinar at 7pm this Wednesday 25 September, where Forest & Bird will be discussing the latest on the Fast-track Approvals Bill and ways you can make sure your voice is heard, including how to lobby your local MP: Register here: https://lnkd.in/g3UAciDT 📷: Central Otago roundhead galaxias / On Lee Lau CC BY 4.0; Myosotis cheesemanii / Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa CC BY 4.0.

Clays. We all consider them as material for pottery, or part of the garden soil. But did you know that clays have critical importance whenever we extract things from the ground? They can present huge problems in industries like mining and oil/gas extraction. Dr. Heather Kaminsky of NAIT Applied Research uses popcorn and post-its to educate us on why this common material requires our attention. Learn more about NAIT Applied Research and how our seven centres of research drive innovation in environmental sustainability: nait.li/3W8Ywpt
