So Friday question time. As most people will be aware in order to get an R290 Heat Pump to deliver 80 degrees take a lot of energy meaning that the COP (Coefficient Of Performance) is only about 2.1 which isn't as high as when lower than 65 degree flow temp is needed so the question is what can you do to improve this? . . . . . . . . . . For those of us like me who are from a Gas Heating Background you would use weather compensation to get your new Gas Fired Condensing Boiler to condense more and get better efficiency's when the external ambient temp is warmer. So what if I told you that you can use the same strategy on the new Elm (formally Birch HT) Air Source Heat Pump? You can use a 0-10 volt signal from your existing BMS to control the temp of your system water on a heat curve like you would on you old gas guzzling boiler, this means that when the system is calling for a 65 degree or below flow temp your COP will be comparable to a regular R290 heat pump which massively effects your SCOP (Seasonal Coefficient Of Performance)numbers and ROI (Return On Investment) numbers. I'll be discussing Norton's latest innovation to make sewers substantially better across Canada: to wit, mandatory downspout disconnection initiated & enforced for municipalities at the provincial level. Municipalities have been unable or unwilling to enforce their own sewer use bylaws, which all make it illegal to discharge rain water to the sanitary sewer. This results in substantially increased flooding risk for all, overflows of sewage to the environment, use of capacity in sewers that we need for housing, and costs for all. Residents PAY for this illegal water to be treated at the wastewater treatment plant. They also PAY and get PTSD from basement flooding, the proximate cause of which is downspouts illegally connected to the sanitary sewer. This one change will substantially reduce insurance costs, also. Talk about a no-brainer. This simple program involves blanketing the muncipality with these sewer signs inside all toilet stalls, both at their own facilties but also to be provided to all small businesses, etc. One averted plumbing call and the sign pays for itself, never mind the substantial long-term reduction of flushing/discharge of deleterious materials. Residents DO NOT UNDERSTAND why they can't flush these items - it is the responsibility of municipalities to educate them! Oh, and not the least of which this retrofit program introduces menstrual equity into existing buildings. #sewersarenottrashcans #menstrualequity I am working for the residents of Canada, to make sewers better for everyone. Period.
