Part 3- Lean manufacturing is so overrated! In part 2 we talked about the “how to” leadership structure/strategy we implemented to start the production lines, team members and culture transformation we needed on our way to Building An Effective Team and delivering results. Now let’s talk about what we actually did on the production floor. *First, we became a 100% REACTIVE team to all shortstops, break downs, and changeovers. Even dedicated proactive MX techs knew that no matter what they were doing, if a hiccup happened on one of the lines it was everyone’s responsibility to get it resolved and the line back to rate. *Second- all scheduled cleans, changeovers, and start ups were supported until completion and the line at rate by the functional experts. This meant they had to leave their straight day job as exempt associates and divide up and conquer on second and third shift. (Sometimes weekends) *Third- we did a lean thing lol. We standardized run modes and trained the entire team on them. This virtually eliminated all emergency stops which create waste, frustration and opportunities for extended downtime. When the line went down it was timed out to minimize all negative results. *Forth- we picked a reliability loss to fix that would give us an impactful win. Remember, that pick doesn’t always have to deliver the most reliability points but can deliver increased engagement, waste improvements and efficiency’s or all of the above. The one we picked delivered reliability, waste reduction, GMPs and made the team members day better delivering significant engagement. *Fifth- we decided that even when we were bad we were going to look good…being bad. If we weren’t meeting expectations on production we would not fail anymore quality and safety audits. We had to get some wins somewhere so I as the Sr. Manager could go to my manager and stakeholders for support. Great audit scores wether internal or external are an expectation and shows stakeholders that you know what is expected of you and that you can deliver. Bad audits reflect bad behaviors and mindsets. Opinion- Until you are the top Manager or owner of the company you work for, you get paid to deliver results! They may tell you it’s not at the top of their expectations but for the most part it’s all they look at. Sure, they are concerned about safety, quality, associates and customers but it boils down to The Bottom Line (as it should)!

RESHORING MANUFACTURING - Possibility or Just a Pipe Dream? Reshoring manufacturing is essentially the reverse process of offshoring, where manufacturing (or other functional areas, typically Shared Service functions, e.g. IT, Customer Service, Accounting, Human Resources) are moved to other countries where labor is cheaper. The core driver to the premise of making America great again is to reintroduce manufacturing back into the United States—a concept known as Reshoring Manufacturing
