HAAG, the Housing Older Women (HOW) Movement and other organisations have worked to highlight the needs of older people, particularly older women who are falling through the cracks of the system, and this resulted in the establishment of Footprint Communities' Housing Older Women Support Service. Finally out in the world! Today, we released Part I of our Bi_Focal on the relationship between Reform and Conservative voters in the UK. Here's what we found: 1️⃣ British politics is loosely social - much variance between the left and right, Labour and Conservative is explained by the social attitudes - but economics explains much of the difference between the different parts of the right and left 2️⃣ Reform’s ancestry is mixed, but is not reliant on previous Brexit Party voters. Party support leans on ancestral Conservative 2019 supporters who’ve shifted allegiance, with over half (4.7%) of Reform’s total voteshare coming from those voting Conservative in 2019 3️⃣ Reform is standing in the way of the Gov capturing new voters. This is highlighted in the graph below, which visualises the different parts of the current Reform coalition. Many Reform voters today who didn’t vote Tory in 2019 look a lot like Tory voters today. In the wake of the 2023 election last week, New Zealand's election process and the peaceful transition of power stands as a testament to the enduring power of democracy. Through a transparent and participatory process, we exercised our right to vote, reflecting the nation's commitment to inclusivity and fairness.  The votes were counted and accepted, and subject to the remaining special votes, a peaceful transition of power has begun. Overall, even though the result was dramatic, the process was uneventful, highlighting an efficient and equitable democratic system worthy of celebration. Reluctantly stepping into the political discourse today, I am looking upon the departure of the Conservatives from power as a significant and positive development. Regrettably, it is difficult to envision any single party delivering the comprehensive reforms our nation so desperately requires. Nonetheless, I firmly believe that public discourse, heavily influenced by those in power, has regrettably devolved into divisive and populist identity politics in recent years. I derive no pleasure from witnessing their downfall; rather, I am saddened for the millions they shouldn't have failed over the past 14 years. My hope is for a new era characterised by a compassionate and forward-thinking government that prioritises the welfare of its citizens above its own interests. This transition, I believe, can serve as a positive step towards the inclusive and progressive future we all aspire to achieve. The Conservatives are haemorrhaging support amongst younger voters. We must turn this around to win the next election. I’m pledging to be a Mayor who delivers for all generations, but particularly the next generation. We must stick to our fundamentals: A Conservative Party of aspiration that is proud of success. A Conservative Party that says whoever you are, wherever you’re from in UK, whatever your background, you can succeed. A Conservative Party that does not just look at the here and now, but looks to the longer-term. A Conservative Party prepared to be honest about the challenges facing the country. And, critically, a Conservative Party prepared to act, even if it is tough, to ensure younger people are better off. We can overturn our youth crisis, we can win the next election and we can deliver for the next generation. Different EP parties acknowledge civil society's role in their party manifestos for the upcoming EP elections. The Party of the European Socialists (PES) calls for support of CSO’s in fostering democracy and the European’s People Party (EPP) states “We commit to fostering a strong and unhindered civil society". Sadly, nothing can be found on supporting civil society in the manifesto of the European Left.  Earlier, we already highlighted that the European Greens Manifesto recognises the valid role of civil society, by stressing that “Democracy cannot flourish without a vibrant civic space and empowered civil society actors”. see here: https://lnkd.in/gek2Y5Vk   We are happy to see that many parties acknowledge the crucial role of civil society, but concrete measures are needed to better support and engage European civil society. Should the House of Lords be more democratic? One of the key arguments for an elected second chamber is that it would make the UK’s political system more democratic overall. But an examination of the principles of representative #democracy suggests that this is neither necessary nor desirable reform for the #HouseOfLords to fulfil its purpose.
