What does “access to justice” mean?  I believe it has implications for individuals and society alike in different ways.   Society has access to justice through democratic ideals, the system of checks and balances, and a collective ability to hold our leaders accountable. Individual access to justice has a slightly different meaning- that is, it turns on the rights of each person to due process, life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness.  Lack of affordable legal representation affects BOTH of these things.  https://lnkd.in/eUq3Y9UM

In this webinar, we discussed the current political and social context in Europe after the June #euelections2024 and ongoing or upcoming challenges that would either facilitate or block ongoing discussions about setting up transitional processes for #Roma in Europe. We tried to answer some of the crucial questions about whether, when, and how to embark on a path toward a peaceful, just, and inclusive future for Roma in Europe through a transitional justice path. The webinar also discussed the specific cases of Germany, Romania, and Spain.

As the Council has just published its position (general approach) on a proposed update to the 2012 Victims’ Rights Directive, I’d like to share this Eurochild article on the revision of the Directive. The forthcoming negotiations among the Parliament, the European Commission, and the Council to agree on the final text of the Directive will be crucial for strengthening the Directive by paying specific attention to the rights of all child victims. https://lnkd.in/eyjZ7-B9

Specifically, the Frederick Douglass Act: · Seeks to promote situational awareness training—prevention—on how not to be a victim for both elementary and secondary students and faculty through the Frederick Douglass Human Trafficking Prevention Education Grants; · Authorizes survivors’ employment, housing, and education programs; · Authorizes a new $175 million over five years program for DOJ Housing Assistance Grants for victims of human trafficking; · Makes scalable programs through training of the trainers and collaboration with Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force; · Encourages the usage of prevention efforts to include accessible, age-appropriate, and trauma-informed approaches for USAID beneficiaries and the further incorporation of counter-trafficking efforts across the development portfolio; · Streamlines statutory language for Tier 2 Watch List; · Reauthorizes the Department of State Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons; and · Adds forced organ harvesting trafficking as part of the annual TIP Report to expose China and other countries for this crime.

In a significant development on our progress towards how we approach First Nations justice issues, Victoria Legal Aid is establishing a stand-alone First Nations Directorate.
