Wisdom demands ongoing learning, and we believe there is wisdom in all our stories! RJIOK staff recently attended a session of the “Building a Liberatory Narrative Training Tour” by the Foundation for Liberating Minds. FLM teaches participants about the narratives that reinforce the carceral state in Oklahoma and how we can interrupt them so that true justice, safety, accountability, redemption and community are realized. In this interview, Katherine Birbalsingh, headmistress of Michaela School, highlights the importance of rules, knowledge, and structured education. She emphasizes that strictness, rooted in love, provides security and high standards for students. A knowledge-rich curriculum is crucial for fostering creative and critical thinking, and deep understanding enables true creativity. Her approach has led to remarkable success at Michaela School, demonstrating the effectiveness of traditional education methods and shared cultural values. On Rules: "Strict is immersed in love. When you're strict with children, it means you love them enough to keep your standards high for them." On Knowledge: "Children need to be taught loads of knowledge. The more knowledge they have, the more hooks they have in their heads to be able to hang more knowledge on, and it grows exponentially." On Education: "The only way you can think in a creative manner or think outside the box and have independent thoughts about anything is to know it really well." https://lnkd.in/gMNTnnfj
