🎉 Celebrate with the Sandwich terns (Sterna sandvicensis) along the coast of Wexford! 🌊 A new Special Protection Area (SPA), stretching as much as 305.000 hectares, will bring some relief to all the vulnerable seabird species that are living in the area. The new designation increases Ireland’s marine protected waters to 9.4%, still a little stretch to reach the goal of 30x30, but every step towards more nature conservation and restoration is important. Our Partner BirdWatch Ireland has been calling the government to meet their targets and take more actions to #restorenature and it finally shows. Now the next big step is to define what “protection” will look like. Tangible objectives and measures need to be established, so the Sandwich terns and all other seabirds can enjoy a splashy bath in their natural habitat. https://lnkd.in/e3qsd8QA Kent Plan Tree 🌳 is joining forces with Butterfly Conservation 🦋 to record White-Letter Hairstreak (WLH) butterflies and Elm Trees across Kent. Mature Elm numbers have massively declined due to Dutch Elm Disease, and as these trees play a vital role in the WLH lifecycle, they, too, have declined. We would appreciate your help collecting photographs and locations of both species. You can do this on a walk in one of our target areas or anywhere across Kent. Test your spotting skills, and don’t forget your binoculars as the WLH fly high in the canopy. Upload your Elm records to iNaturalist, and If you’re lucky enough to spot the rare WLH, try to capture its fine ‘W’ markings and upload your photo to iRecord Butterflies. If you’re unsure about the butterfly species use the comment box to describe your sighting. In 2023, U.S. scientists declared 21 species officially extinct. Included on the shameful list are birds, mussels, fish, and a mammal. Separately, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), a conservation organization that monitors global species populations, determined the Java Stingaree (a type of stingray) has gone extinct. Destroyed habitat, pollution, climate change, exploitation, and invasive species are the culprits. Today's rate of extinction is "at least tens to hundreds of times higher" than extinctions that occurred over the past 10 million years, the UN has found. Yet biologists and conservationists are fighting to spare the many endangered species that aren't confirmed extinct, a cause that has saved a diversity of animals and plants in recent decades: the bald eagle, humpback whale, American alligator, whooping crane, and beyond.
"Until it's too late, it's not too late," Sea McKeon, a biologist and director of the Marine Program at the American Bird Conservancy, told Mashable. "This is a big move that conservationists are trying to make. We need all hands on deck." https://lnkd.in/gcn9DwwV

Turtle love is in the air! Wisconsin’s 11 turtle species lay eggs in nests from late May through June in sunny and well-draining uplands. As females move during annual nesting migrations, they become venerable as they pass through roadways. What do you do when you come across a turtle crossing? Here are some tips! Do: ✅ Move turtles across in the same direction they were already heading, even if it's away from the water. ✅ Hold them along the back edge of their shell to avoid bites, or use a blunt object to push them across the road. ✅ Report your sighting to the Wisconsin Turtle Conservation Program (ow.ly/jT0i50Jj9yA) to help ID high-mortality locations along roads. Don't: 🚫 Put yourself or others in danger on a busy road. Sometimes just pulling over and putting your hazards on is enough to get people to slow down to allow the turtle to cross safely. 🚫 Pick them up by their tail. 🚫 Relocate them to a place you think is more suitable. Simply move them to the other side of the road they are crossing and let them go on their way.

Being a professional in wildlife management, sometimes we forget the natural history component. Every day that passes, I see less natural history being embraced and communicated by managers, and environmental educators; natural history is being lost. For those who know me – it is my deep passion to intertwine the natural history, biology and conservation of bears when speaking with the public. My main motivation for writing this article: identify the historic relics and remnants of what remains from the previous era of bear management, outlining the previous management strategies, and tying it to present day. Decades ago, but like today, Yellowstone National Park struggled with increasing visitation and tourism. The people, lodging, and transportation fluxes generated refuse and waste that the park had to manage. The park responded by creating dump locations where refuse and garbage would be deposited. This article discusses the history of these refuse sites, a brief history on previous bear management, and how far we have come with our understanding of bears, their conservation, and management today. https://lnkd.in/gv2hBeMF
